Requirements for Setting Up a Catering Business at Home

Setting Up a Catering Business at Home

Step 1: Select Business Structure

Sole proprietorship is a good business model if you have a limited budget. You do not need to register a sole proprietorship. However, you must understand all the risks associated with it. One major risk is that if your business falls into debt, your personal assets will be at risk.

If you want limited liability protection, you must choose another business model for your catering business such as a private limited company. By doing this, your personal assets will be protected when your business makes losses or falls into debt.

It is mandatory to register a private limited company with the Registrar of Companies (ROC). So, be mentally prepared for the costs associated with company registration. However, one good news is that a private limited company has better access to funding options such as loans, investors, etc.

Sole proprietorships have very limited funding options. Whatever business model you choose, do so wisely.

Step 2: Choose Business Name

After deciding the business structure, you must choose the business name. Make sure your business name is unique and doesn’t already exist.

At the same time, make sure the business name reflects the business activities. The customers must be easily able to understand from your business name that it is related to food catering.

After deciding the business name, conduct a trademark or company name search. If the name isn’t taken, then you may choose the name. However, if the business name already exists, you’ll have to pick another name for your business.

You may also get trademark registration for your company name. By doing this, you will get legal protection if someone infringes your trademark.

Step 3: Create a Business Plan

Creating a business plan is one of the most important requirements. Although it will take some effort, it will ultimately be beneficial because you will have a backup plan and will be more prepared to handle the catering business.

Use a business plan template or draft your own from scratch. A lot of study must be done when you do develop the plan. In the plan, you must include a summary of your company, a market analysis, your business structure, a list of the delicious foods and ingredients you plan to serve your target clientele, and a marketing and financial plan.

Remember you also need to research the competitors and identify your possible clients. Think about whether a particular kind of catering is currently underutilized in your community.

Your business plan should outline the vendors and suppliers you intend to work with when launching a catering company. Consider obtaining everything you'll need for catering events, including food, chairs, cutlery, dishes, china, and linens.

Step 4: Secure FSSAI License

Securing FSSAI license is one of the most important requirements for operating a food business in India legally. It is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) according to the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act 2006.

There are three types of FSSAI certificates: FSSAI Basic Registration Certificate, FSSAI State Certificate and FSSAI Central License.

The FSSAI food license type is issued depending on the annual turnover of the business. FSSAI basic license is issued to small-scale businesses with a turnover of less than Rs. 12 lakhs.

The FSSAI state license is issued to mid-sized businesses with a turnover of between Rs. 12 lakhs and Rs. 20 crores. Businesses having a turnover of more than Rs. 20 crores need the FSSAI central license.

Step 5: NPOP Certification (Optional)

NPOP’s full form is "National Programme for Organic Production”. The NPOP certificate is issued by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

It is granted to organic food products that meet the required standards. If you want to provide catering services specifically for organic food, then it is recommended to secure the NPOP certificate.

After getting this certificate, you can charge a premium for catering certified organic food and make more money from your catering business.
