TAN Registration

TAN is Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, a 10-digit alphanumeric number. It is issued to persons who are required to deduct tax or collect tax on payments made by them. TAN is required in all Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) or Tax Collected at Source (TCS) return, TDS payments and other transaction regarding TDS with the Income Tax department.

 Income Tax department uses TAN to track the payments and filings of a person or entity that is liable to deduct tax at source and pay to the government. For this same reason, TAN registration is required. 

Features of TAN

 Individuals who are salaried are not required to obtain TAN or deduct tax at source.

  • It is mandatory for business entities to obtain TAN.
  • Once TAN is issued, it is valid for a lifetime.
  • TAN must me quoted in all TDS/TCS returns, challans and certificates to be issued.

 TAN Registration Process

  • Form 49B is used to apply for TAN registration.
  • It must be completed and filed at any of the TAN Facilitation Center namely NSDL.
  • Application fee is to be provided for TAN registration.
  • Once the form is filled and submitted, an acknowledgement is received.
  • Submit the acknowledgement duly signed and documents required to the NSDL within 15 days from the date of online application.
  • After the documents and application is verified by NSDL, the TAN number will be communicated to the applicant.
