The company was a joint venture between Maruti Udyog Ltd and Suzuki in 1981. Suzuki was the first Japanese automaker as well as first major foreign automaker to invest in India. In 1982, the first facility of Maruti was set up in Gurgaon, Haryana. 

Maruti was originally majority-owned by the government of India and Suzuki only held 26% stakes in the company. However, the government reduced its stake gradually. It partially departed from business by making it a public company in 2003. Then, in 2007, it sold all of its remaining shares to Suzuki Motor Corporation. 

Maruti Suzuki is the largest Suzuki subsidiary when it comes to production volume as well as sales. As of 13 September 2025, the market cap of the company is Rs. 4,81,822 Cr. It produces cars, trucks, vans and buses. Some of the popular vehicles provided by Tata Motors are Tata Harrier EV, Nexon EV and Tiago in the passenger segment, and commercial vehicles like Tata Ace Gold, Tata Yodha pickup, Tata Intra light commercial trucks and Tata Winger van.

It is a part of Bajaj Group and was founded by Jamnalal Bajaj in 1940s in the state of Rajasthan. As of 13 September 2025, Bajaj Auto market cap is Rs. 251317.88 crore.

Bajaj Auto was established on 29 November 1945 as M/s Bajaj Trading Corporation Private Limited. Initially, the company imported and sold two and three wheelers in India. In the year 1959, the company obtained license from Government of India to manufacture two wheelers and three wheelers as well as a license from Piaggio to produce Vespa scooters in India. 

Bajaj Auto became a public limited company in 1960. With the launch of motorcycles in 1986, the company transitioned from being a scooter manufacturer to a two wheeler manufacturer. In 1984, Bajaj Auto signed a technical assistance agreement with Kawasaki to collaborate to expand the production and sales of motorcycles in the local market.

Bajaj Auto is the third largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. In India, it is the second largest motorcycle manufacturer. Also, the company is the world’s largest three wheeler manufacturer. Bajaj Auto crossed Rs. 1 trillion market cap in 2020. This made it the most valuable two wheeler company in the world. 

5. Hyundai Motors

Hyundai Motors is originally a Korean automobile manufacturer. However, its Indian subsidiary Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has a major presence across the Indian automobile industry. HMIL was formed in 1996. By sales volume, it is the second largest car manufacturer in India. As of 13 September 2025, the market cap of HMIL is Rs. 208067.40 cr.

When the Korean Hyundai Motor Company entered Indian automobile market in the year 1996, Hyundai brand wasn’t quite famous in India. During Hyundai’s entry, five major automobile brands were quite popular namely Maruti, Premier, Mahindra, Premier and Tata. 

Daewoo had entered the market three years earlier with the Cielo, while Ford, Opel and Honda had come in less than a year prior. For over a decade before Hyundai's arrival, Maruti Suzuki held a near monopoly in the passenger car segment, as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra focused solely on utility and commercial vehicles. 

Hindustan and Premier produced outdated and uncompetitive products. HMIL's first car, the Hyundai Santro, was launched on September 23, 1998, and quickly became a massive success. Within a few months, HMIL became India's second-largest automobile manufacturer and the largest automobile exporter. Today, Hyundai Motor India Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company and stands as the second-largest passenger car exporter and the second-largest car manufacturer in India.

6. Eicher Motors

Eicher Motors is one of the top 10 automobile manufacturers in India. It was founded in 1948, and is headquartered in New Delhi, India. You must have heard about Royal Enfield - manufacturer of middleweight motorcycles. Its parent company is Eicher. Eicher also manufactures Eicher branded buses and trucks under joint venture with Volvo Group. As of 13 September 2025, market cap of Eicher Motors is Rs. 188566.12 crore.

Eicher Motors Ltd’s origins can be traced back to Goodearth company established in 1948 for selling and servicing imported tractors in India. In the year 1958, Eicher Tractor Corporation of India was set up to manufacture tractors in India by Goodearth in collaboration with Eicher Tractors of Germany. 

In the year 1959, it manufactured its first indigenous tractor. A year later, it changed its name to Eicher Tractors India Ltd. Eicher India has been completely owned by Indian shareholders since 1965. Eicher Motors sold its tractors and engines business to TAFE tractors of Chennai in 2005

7. TVS Motor Co.

TVS Motor Co is an Indian motorcycle manufacturer. It is one of the top 10 motorcycle companies in India. As of 13 September, TVS motor market cap is Rs. 165919.42 crore. The company is headquartered in Chennai. TVS is a leading exporter of two wheelers and exports to over 60 countries across the world.

TVS Motor Co is TVS Group’s flagship company. It is the largest company of the group when it comes to valuation and turnover. T.V. Sundram Iyengar started with the first bus service in Madurai in 1911 and founded TVS - a company in transportation business with large trucks and buses fleet under ‘South Roadways’ name. 

In 1980, the TVS 50, India's first two-seater moped, rolled off the assembly line at the factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. On December 6, 2017, TVS launched its highly anticipated motorcycle, the Apache RR 310, at an event in Chennai. This 310 cc motorcycle, developed in collaboration with BMW, features the first-ever full fairing on a TVS bike, dual-channel ABS, electronic fuel injection (EFI) and KYB suspension kits. 

It is expected to compete with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 250SL, Bajaj Pulsar, Dominar and Honda CBR 250R once it hits the market. The Apache RR 310 was entirely designed and developed in India. On 17 April 2020, TVS Motor Company acquired Norton Motorcycle Company in an all cash deal. 

Initially, they continued the production of Norton 961 Commando motorcycles at Donington Park using the existing staff. However, the Donington factory has since closed, and the production of the upgraded 961 model is now carried out in Solihull.

8. Hero Motocorp

Hero Motocorp Ltd, earlier known as Hero Honda, is an Indian motorcycle company headquartered in Delhi. It has a market share of 30% in the Indian two wheeler industry. The Munjal family is the biggest shareholder in the company, and has a 34.75% stake. 

The operations of Hero Honda commenced in 1984 as a joint venture of Hero Cycles of India and Honda of Japan. Brand name “Hero” is used by Munjal brothers for Hero Cycles - their flagship brand. At Dharuhera, India, a joint venture between Hero Group and Honda Motor Co was established as Hero Honda Co.

The company introduced low cost motorcycles during 1980s in India. It was popular for its campaign based on slogan ‘Fill It, Shut It, Forget It’. This slogan emphasized the fuel efficiency of the motorcycles. In 2001, the company became the world’s largest two wheeler manufacturing company. 

The production of the company exceeded 100 million in 2021. In that year, it was the only Indian vehicle brand to exceed 100 million in production. In 2021, it launched an online virtual showroom. As of 13 September 2025, Hero Motorcorp has a market capitalization of Rs. 106065.98 crore.

9. Ola Electric

Ola Electric is one of the largest automobile companies in India. It was established in 2017 and is headquartered in Bengaluru. Olo Electric founder is Bhavish Aggarwal. The company designs as well as manufactures electric two wheelers, like Ola S1 in 3 variants Ola S1 Air, S1 Pro and Ola S1X. The manufacturing facility of the company is in Krishnagiri town of Tamil Nadu.

At the manufacturing facility in TN, the company also produces battery cells. The company led the electric scooter market with a 30% market share in the year 2023. As of 2025, the market capitalization of Ola Electric is Rs. 25979.79 crore. 

Ola is a publicly listed company. It launched its initial public offering on 2 August 2024. Via IPO, the company raised Rs. 5,500 cr. In the IPO, existing investors as well as the founder sold 84.9 million shares.

10. Force Motors

Force Motors is one of the top 10 automobile companies in India. It was established in 1958 as Abhay Firodia group flagship company. Force Motors founder is N.K. Firodia. The company manufactures fully vertically integrated small and light CVs, agricultural tractors and multi utility vehicles. 

It manufactures the vehicles to various countries in Africa, Middle East, Asia and Latin America. Till 2005, the company was known as Bajaj Tempo. The company was awarded a contract by BMW. This resulted in a facility in Chennai for producing and testing engines and transmissions exclusively for all BMW cars and SUVs made in India. 

In 2016, a new plant was inaugurated at Chakan, Pune, for assembling and testing engines for all Mercedes Cars and SUVs made in India. Force India is one of the 500 fortune companies. As of 13 September 2025, the market cap of the company is Rs. 24232.46 cr.
