5G Implementation Roadmap: How the DoT is Shaping the Future of Connectivity

In recent years, the telecom industry has gone through several changes such as an increase in competition, a change in customer demand, launch of new technologies. The major change in the telecom is a shift from traditional voice and data to internet-based services. This change has been seen because of high-speed internet access, an increase in the number of smartphones, and the growing popularity of cloud-based applications and services.

So, to be in the market, telecom providers are focusing more on delivering fast and reliable internet services. In this article, we shared how DoT is implementing 5G and shaping a future road of connectivity for telecom providers and customers.

What is 5G Technology?

In today’s changing needs, 5G will work far better than other networks. It is because the speed of 5G is 20 Gbps and on the other hand, the speed of 4G is 1 Gbps. Also, 5G has lower latency which improves the performance of business applications, online gaming, video call, streaming and much more. 5G spreads into different industries such as healthcare, education, automobile, and manufacturing.

The 5G technology takes the connectivity from the cloud to clients. This network is not like earlier generations that only ensured connectivity, the 5G network works on virtualised and software-driven that exploit cloud technologies.

The 5G network connects cellular and Wi-Fi access, this means that users can stay connected as they move between outdoor wireless connections and wireless networks inside buildings without user intervention or the need to re-authenticate. Also, the 5G network will improve the connectivity in rural areas.

Challenges in the Telecom Industry

In the industry, the demand for bandwidth and speed has increased. It is because of the data-intensive applications such as video streaming, virtual reality, and online games that require a high-speed internet connection to work perfectly. To meet the demands of the market, the providers are shifting to more fast networks such as 5G. It is the latest wireless network with faster speed and lower latency.

The telecom industry is facing competition from the giants such as Google and Amazon. They are creating digital technologies to offer new products and services. So, the telecom providers are changing their business model or exploring new ways for partnership and collaboration.

Privacy and security are new concerns for the industry as more data is now transmitted and stored. There is need for a better security measures to protect the cyber threats and data breaches. The telecom providers are investing in advanced security technologies and implementing new strict data protection policies. It is done to save their networks and customers’ personal information.

Similarly, the telecom industry is focusing on sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint. Now more focus is given to technologies that are environment-friendly and energy-efficient. It is done to reduce the carbon footprint, and it can be done by transitioning to renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency in their networks and data centres. Having a DoT certification is necessary for every telecom operator to provide services legally.

Responsibilities of the Department of Telecom

The Department of Telecommunications comes under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The secretary of DoT is a senior member of Indian Administrative Services and the secretary reports to the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology. In October 2000, when BSNL was formed, the basic telecommunication services were shifted to BSNL. Currently, the DoT's powers and responsibilities are:

Strategies Followed by DoT in the Telecom Industry

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has formed eight groups under the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) to make India a leading exporter of telecom technologies. The motive behind creating these groups is to transform India as a telecom manufacturing hub for global relevance and gain market share in both developed and emerging markets. These groups are led by industry veterans. Following the DoT compliance is important to avoid legal issues.

The DoT has created a frame of security standards around Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) which is a key feature of 5G technology. The steps that are department is taking are to safeguard the the telecom networks. The National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS) is a unit under DoT, which started working on frame security standards that bind the telecom operators and equipment makers. The NFV is an intrinsic part of 5G that allows some telecom network functions to be virtualised or software-driven.

Conclusion

To conclude, the telecom industry is facing a change in innovation, advanced technology, change in customer needs and increased competition. To stay ahead of the competition and these trends, telecom providers need to deliver high-quality services and meet the needs of customers. Also, checks for sustainability and security of its network and protects the data of its customers. If you are looking for DoT compliance or DoT certification, then reach out to Registrationwala.
