What is Model Approval in India?
Model approval is issued by the legal metrology department as per the Section 22 of legal Meterology Act, 2009. The approval is issued to the manufacturers and importers of weights and measuring products.
Model approval is a type of legal metrology certificate issued to importers and manufactures of weights and measuring product. As per section 22 of the LMA (Legal Metrology Act), the importers and manufacturers of such products have to apply for and obtain model approval from the Legal Metrology Department, Central Government, In Delhi.
The standard application process involves application filing, document submission and finally sample testing. If the product meets the Indian metrology standards, the applicant is issued the model approval.
Eligibility Criteria for Model Approval in India
As per the rules of legal metrology model approval, the weights and measuring product of the importer or the manufacturer must meet the regualtory requirements of the Legal metrology department.
Documents Required for Model Approval in india
To obtain the Model Approval, you must provide the following documents.
- Certificate of incorporation
- Other business licenses pertaining to your business
- Two passport sized photograph of the applicant.
- A duly filled application form
- Schematic diagram of the weights and/or measuring product.
- Description of the sealing provisions of the product
- In case you're an importer, you have to provide a declaration, stating that no changes were made to the product before it's put to sale in India.
- Details that you’re required to input on the display pane of the package.
- Receipt of the model approval fees
Process of obtaining the Model Approval in India
To issue model approval legal metrology has devices to methods that differ based on whether the applicant is an importer or a manufacturer:
- If the applicant is a manufacturer, the product has to go through mandatory testing by the Directorate General of Legal Meterology Department. the steps of it are as follows:
- Gather the required documents
- Fill the application form
- Submit the duly filled application form, alongside the documents and a sample of the product to the Legal Metrology department
- The department would conduct an initial inspection of the documents before forwarding the sample to Directorate General for testing
- If the product fits the regulatory requirements of Legal Metrology Department, you'll obtain the Legal Metrology Certificate.
- If the applicant is an importer, product testing is not required:
- Gather the required documents
- Fill the application form
- Submit the duly filled application form, alongside the documents and a sample of the product to the Legal Metrology department
- The department would conduct an initial inspection of the documents
- If no errors have been made from your end, you'll obtain the model approval certificate.
