On 16 July 2025, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi gave a nod to Prime Minister Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) to boost agricultural productivity. The scheme will remain in force for a period of 6 years, starting from 2025-26, to cover 100 districts in India.
Announced earlier this year during the Budget, the PMDDKY scheme draws inspiration from NITI Aayog’s Aspirational District Programme and is a first-of-its-kind scheme. It focuses majorly on agriculture and allied sectors.
It aims to increase adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and crop diversification. Further, it envisages to augment post harvest storage at panchayat and block levels, improve irrigation units and make long-term and short-term credit accessible and available to farmers.
The implementation of PMDDKY will be done via convergence of 36 existing schemes across 11 departments, other state schemes and local collaborations with the private sector. The 100 districts for the scheme will be identified on the basis of three key indicators i.e., low cropping intensity, low cropping intensity and less credit disbursement.
In each state/union territory, the number of districts will be on the basis of share of net cropped area and operational holdings. With that being said, at least 1 district will be chosen from each state for PMDDKY. To ensure effective planning, implementation and monitoring of Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, committees will be formed at various levels including district, state and national level.
The District Dhan Dhaanya Samiti will finalize the District Agriculture and Allied Activities Plan. This committee also will include progressive farmers as members. The district plans will align with national goals of conservation of water and soil health, crop diversification, self-sufficient in agro and allied sectors and expansion of organic and natural farming in the country.
PMDDKY’s progress in each covered district will be checked on a monthly basis via 117 key performance indicators through a dashboard. Additionally, NITI will also take a look at the district plans and offer guidance. For each district, central nodal officers will be appointed. They will also review the scheme regularly to ensure it is being implemented in an effective manner.
The overall average against key performance indicators will rise as the targeted outcomes in the chosen 100 districts under PMDDKY will improve. The scheme will lead to increase in agricultural productivity, local livelihood generation and value addition in agro and allied sectors.
Moreover, it will boost domestic production and help to achieve Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) vision of the Government of India. The national indicators will visibly represent an upward trend upon improvement in indicators of 100 districts under the scheme.
