Basically, a TPA in insurance means a company that is registered with the IRDAI and hired by an insurer, for a fee or by whatever name called and as may be mentioned in the health services agreement, to provide health services like claims processing and cashless treatment facilitation at network hospitals. 

It acts as an intermediary between the insurer and policyholders. The primary regulations governing the third party administrators in India are Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) (Third Party Administrators - Health Services) Regulations, 2016. 

Role of Third Party Administrator in Insurance

The roles and responsibilities of TPA in health insurance are as follows :-

  • One of the primary roles of a TPA is to service claims under the health insurance policies. They are also responsible for processing claims for hospitalization coverage under both personal accident policies and domestic travel policies.

  • To ensure quality care, TPAs need to manage a network of hospitals. 

  • One of their key responsibilities is to facilitate the smooth and prompt processing of claims, beginning as soon as the insured person submits a claim. 

  • To verify the authenticity of claims made by the insured individuals, TPAs thoroughly review medical reports, discharge summaries and bills for accuracy. 

  • Additionally, the TPAs should establish 24/7 helplines that are accessible nationwide so policyholders can reach out with any questions/concerns whenever and from wherever they want. 

  • TPAs also arrange value added services, including ambulance services, wellness programs and specialized consultations.

  • They provide ID cards to the insured individuals. These ID cards must then be presented at hospitals for cashless claim settlements. 

  • It is the TPA's responsibility to ensure the seamless delivery of services they provide while sharing their expertise in health insurance with the insured individuals.
