DPIN Full Form, Importance & More

DPIN full form is Designated Partner Identification Number. It is used to identify a person who is appointed as a designated partner in a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) maintains the identification and records of designated partners through this number. However, a separate DPIN is no longer issued. Since 9 July 2011, DIN and DPIN have been integrated and the same DIN is used for LLP purposes.

So, if a person already has a DIN, the same DIN is used as the DPIN when they become a designated partner in an LLP. In this blog, we will explain what DPIN means, its importance and how a person can obtain a DIN for becoming a designated partner.

What is DPIN Full Form?

DPIN full form is Designated Partner Identification Number. It is the identification number used for a designated partner of an LLP. DPIN is linked to the individual, not to the LLP. This means a person who is a designated partner in more than one LLP can use the same identification number for all of them. The MCA introduced this system to avoid having separate DIN and DPIN numbers for the same person.

Since July 2011, a DIN is also used as the DPIN for LLP-related purposes. If someone wants to become a designated partner but does not have a DIN, they need to obtain one through the applicable MCA process. For an individual being appointed as a designated partner in an existing LLP, Form DIR-3 is used to apply for DIN.

Importance of DPIN

The main importance of DPIN/DIN is that it helps identify the individuals who are responsible for the management and compliance of an LLP. To further understand its importance, go through the key points given below:-

  • This unique number lets the MCA identify and keep a record of the designated partners in LLPs throughout the country.

  • A valid DIN/DPIN is used in various LLP filings and MCA records relating to designated partners.

  • If a person is a designated partner in more than one LLP, the same DIN can be used as DPIN.

  • It helps in keeping the proper records of the persons associated with the management of LLPs.

  • If an individual does not have a DIN/DPIN, they will need to obtain one before appointment as a designated partner of an existing LLP in accordance with relevant MCA process.

How to Get DPIN/DIN for an Existing LLP?

To get DIN/DPIN for an existing LLP, the following steps need to be followed carefully:-

Step 1:- First, you need a valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). You will use it to digitally sign the required MCA forms.

Step 2:- Log in to the MCA V3 portal and fill out Form DIR-3 with your personal details and other required information.

Step 3:- After filling out the form, you need to digitally sign it and get it certified by a practicing CA, CS or CMA. You also need to pay the applicable government filing fee.

Step 4:- Once the form is submitted and processed by the MCA, your DIN is allotted. This DIN will also be used as your DPIN when you are appointed as a designated partner in an LLP.

How to Get Din/DPIN for a New LLP?

If you are registering a new LLP, you can apply for the DINs of up to two proposed designated partners along with the LLP incorporation application. The following steps need to be followed for doing this:-

Step 1:- The proposed designated partners need a valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) to sign the MCA forms online.

Step 2:- Reserve your LLP name through the RUN-LLP service on the MCA portal or apply for name reservation through Form FiLLiP.

Step 3:- Submit Form FiLLiP along with the required details as well as documents. If the proposed designated partners do not have DINs, their DINs can be applied for through the same form rather than separately.

Step 4:- After the MCA approves the application, the LLP is incorporated and the DINs are allotted to the eligible designated partners.

Conclusion

DPIN full form is Designated Partner Identification Number. It is an important identification number for designated partners of an LLP. It helps the MCA identify the individuals who are responsible for managing an LLP and maintain their records. Since a separate DPIN is no longer allotted by MCA, the person's DIN is also used for their role as a designated partner at an LLP.
