Reliance Jio is undoubtedly one of the leading telecom companies in India. Although it entered the market much later than companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea, it took the telecom industry by storm upon arrival. Jio launched its commercial services in September 2016.
At a time when customers had to pay for voice calls and mobile data, Jio introduced its Welcome Offer to provide free voice calls, free national roaming and free 4G data to subscribers for a limited period of time. While customers still needed to obtain a SIM card, these introductory offers helped Jio to stand out from its competitors and changed the Indian telecom industry.
Now, in 2026, Jio has completed 10 years in the telecom industry. The company is also preparing to launch the IPO of its parent digital services company Jio Platforms in October 2026. Therefore, it is worth looking at Reliance Jio’s 10-year journey, its major achievements and how it transformed the Indian telecom sector.
Reliance Jio, officially known as Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, is an Indian telecommunications company. It was originally established on 15 February 2007 as Infotel Broadband Services Limited. Later on, Reliance Industries acquired the company and rebranded it as Jio. On 5 September 2016, Jio finally launched its commercial services and quickly became a recognised name in the telecom sector.
Reliance Jio is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jio Platforms Limited, which is itself a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited. Akash Ambani, the son of Reliance Industries founder Mukesh Ambani, is the chairman of Reliance Jio. He has held his current position at Reliance Jio since June 2022.
Let’s take a look at key milestones Reliance Jio has achieved in past ten years and how the company has transformed telecom industry in India.

Although Reliance Jio was originally incorporated in 2007, it began its commercial operations in 2016. In just 170 days following its commercial launch, this company hit 100 million subscribers. Jio did not simply enter the market as another player. It entered the market with a unique strategy that its competitors had never imagined in their wildest dreams. Jio decided to offer free voice calls, free national roaming and free 4G data to users as part of its introductory offer. Initially, the offer was available until 31 December 2016. However, later on, the company decided to extend it to 31 March 2017.
At a time when telecom companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea were charging customers for voice calls and mobile data, Jio offered these services for free under its introductory offer. This move quickly changed the Indian telecom sector and put immense pressure on Jio’s competitors. But that was not all. Jio also bundled entertainment services and digital applications with its connectivity offerings.
Jio's aggressive pricing strategy completely disrupted the telecom market. It put pressure on revenues and share prices of existing telcos. The company showed how a new player could challenge established telecom companies that had been operating in the industry for decades.
After offering free data for several months, Jio finally started charging customers for data services. However, it continued to provide voice calls free of charge. This helped the company attract more customers and retain its existing ones. By the first anniversary of its launch, Jio had attracted around 130 million users and secured more than 10% market share.
Achieving this level of growth in such a short time was truly remarkable for a telecom company. Naturally, its competitors could not sit back and watch their customers move to Jio. They responded by reducing their tariffs. However, the financial pressure also led to faster consolidation across the telecom industry.
Jio also introduced the JioPhone on 21 July 2017 during Reliance Industries' Annual General Meeting. The phone primarily targeted consumers who wanted affordable access to internet-based services. It became publicly available in September 2017.
By 2018, just two years after Jio entered the telecom market, the changes brought by the company were quite evident. Mobile data usage across India had grown sharply from around 20 crore GB per month before Jio's launch to nearly 370 crore GB. At the same time, data prices dropped from around Rs 250 per GB to less than Rs 15 per GB. By the end of June 2018, Jio had gained more than 215 million users.
Jio's entry also changed the competition in the telecom industry. Previously, each telecom circle had around eight or nine private operators. By the end of 2018, the market had narrowed down to just three major players, i.e., Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.
In July 2019, Jio became India's largest mobile operator by subscriber count. It had around 331.3 million subscribers. Later, in the same year, the company began changing its pricing strategy. In October 2019, Jio announced a charge of 6 paise per minute for outgoing calls made to other mobile networks. This charge was linked to the interconnection usage charge (IUC), which telecom operators paid to connect off-net mobile voice calls to other networks.
To collect this amount from customers, Jio introduced special top-up vouchers. Calls between Jio users and incoming calls continued to remain free. This move marked a noticeable change in Jio's earlier approach of offering free voice calls and showed that its pricing strategy was beginning to evolve.
In 2020, Jio Platforms attracted investments from several major international companies and investment funds. Facebook (now Meta) invested Rs 43,574 crore for a 9.99% stake in Jio Platforms in April. Google later agreed to invest Rs 33,737 crore for a 7.73% stake in July. In the same month, Jio crossed 400 million subscribers, which made it the first telecom operator to reach such a milestone.
Other Jio investors included Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, which invested around Rs 5,684 crore and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which invested Rs 11,367 crore. Several other global investors also joined during the year. In total, Jio Platforms raised approx. Rs 1.52 lakh crore from strategic and financial investors in 2020.
From 1 January 2021, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) officially put an end to the Interconnect Usage Charges regime. Following this, Jio decided to make all off-net domestic voice calls free again.
During this year, the telco also collaborated with WhatsApp and Google for expansion of digital offerings. Jio partnered with Google to co-develop and launch the JioPhone Next, an affordable 4G phone. Jio’s collaboration with WhatsApp focused on integration of JioMart directly into the messaging app.
The years 2022 and 2023 marked an important step in telecom operator Jio's journey. In October 2022, the company began beta trials of its True 5G services in a total of four cities, namely Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi. This gave selected users a chance to experience the next generation of mobile connectivity. Jio expanded its 5G network quickly over the following months.
By 31 January 2023, the telco’s True 5G services were made available in a total of 225 cities across India. This snowballing 5G adoption added a new level of competition to the telecom market. Other operators also had to expand their 5G networks and work to attract customers looking for faster internet connectivity.
Jio's 5G rollout became one of the largest network expansions of its kind. According to Ericsson, Jio was on track to complete world's fastest and largest nationwide mid-band 5G rollout outside China by end of 2023. The telecom company went on to achieve this target.
In June 2024, Jio increased mobile tariffs by around 12–27% for most of its customers. It also limited unlimited 5G data to users with active plans of 2 GB per day or more. Users on lower plans needed a Rs. 61 add-on voucher to access unlimited 5G.
Jio took this step to increase its average revenue per user and earn better returns on its large network investments. This showed a shift in Jio’s strategy from adding on more users to earning more revenue from its existing customers. Airtel and Vodafone Idea also increased their tariffs after Jio’s move.
In 2025, Reliance Industries’ FY25 annual report showed that Jio had more than 480 million users. Jio had become the world’s largest data network. Of these users, 191 million were connected to its 5G network. These 5G users contributed around 45% of Jio’s total wireless data traffic.
These numbers showed how much Jio had grown since its commercial launch in 2016. They also showed that more users were moving towards 5G services, which helped Jio strengthen its position in the telecom market.
In 2026, Jio’s plans went way beyond mobile connectivity. Reliance Industries focused on growing Jio’s business in AI, as many companies were also moving towards AI. Jio also continued to focus on fixed broadband and satellite communications. By March 2026, Jio had 524 million subscribers, which showed the telco’s steady growth over the years. This included 268 million 5G users, and 5G accounted for around 55% of Jio’s total wireless data traffic. Jio’s fixed broadband user base also reached 27.1 million, giving it an estimated 43% market share in FY26.
Apart from this, Jio Platforms IPO plans also moved forward. At the company’s AGM in June, Reliance announced that the Jio Platforms board had approved the filing of its Draft Red Herring Prospectus with financial market regulator SEBI on 19 June 2026. The company’s IPO is expected to be an important step in Jio’s growth journey. In the next section, we have discussed the IPO details in more detail.
