Confused why the bank domains now have “.bank.in” in their domain names? To clear your confusion, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had directed all banks to migrate their existing web domains to the new ‘.bank.in’ domain by 31 October 2025.
The change in domain names of banks is a result of this instruction. The Central Bank issued this instruction to all banks in a circular dated 22 April 2025. So, the banks were given plenty of time to introduce the new change.
According to the PIB Fact Check’s social media post on X (formerly known as Twitter), “The Indian National Internet Exchange (NIXI), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has appointed the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) as the exclusive registrar for this domain.”
The RBI’s circular dated 22 April 2025 stated, “It has now been decided to operationalise the ‘. bank.in’ domain for banks through the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), which has been authorised by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to serve as the exclusive registrar for this domain.”
The circular further stated, “Banks may contact IDRBT at sahyog@idrbt.ac.in to initiate the registration process. IDRBT shall guide the banks on various aspects related to the application process and migration to the new domain.”
In recent years, numerous users have been targeted by phishing scams in which criminals set up imitation websites with slight URL alterations. These fraudulent pages deceive customers into providing their banking information and lead to monetary losses, sometimes amounting to lakhs of rupees.
To deal with this, the RBI had mandated the use of the .bank.in domain. This domain offers a secure and exclusive online space as compared to the general web domains. Created by the central bank for Indian banks, this domain is intended to reduce digital payment fraud and strengthen public confidence when it comes to online banking.
Since the domain migration deadline for banks is now over, the customers are advised to check the website addresses quite carefully before finally logging in to ensure they’re using the official banking sites.
