All India Institute of Ayurveda Signs an MoU with GIC

All India Institute of Ayurveda signed a Common Empanelment Memorandum of Understanding with General Insurance Council on 10 February 2026. This is believed to be a major step towards integration of Ayurveda with the mainstream health insurance ecosystem. With this MoU, the AIIA has now been empanelled with all 32 general insurance companies under the General Insurance Council. It will enable patients to avail cashless treatment facilities for eligible Ayurveda-based healthcare treatments.

Prof. (Vaidya) P. K. Prajapati, Director, AIIA, and Shri Segar Sampathkumar, Director (Health), General Insurance Council, formally signed the MoU in the esteemed presence of Prof. Bejon Kumar Misra, Chairman, Core Group of Experts on Ayush Health Insurance. Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Vyas, Dean (Ph.D.), Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Yadav, Dean (PG), Dr. Alka Kapoor, Director Medical Services (DMS) and other senior faculty members of AIIA also attended the event. 

During the event, AIIA Director Prof. Vaidya PK Prajapati announced that the signing of MoU has made AIIA eligible to provide cashless treatment services under all 32 insurance companies affiliated with the General Insurance Council. He expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Ayush as well as the entire AIIA team for their dedicated efforts. He stated that this initiative will greatly benefit patients by improving access, affordability and trust in Ayurveda-based healthcare. 

Prof. Bejon Kumar Misra, Chairman of the Core Group of Experts on Ayush Health Insurance, congratulated the AIIA team. He noted that this is the first time in the country that an Ayush institution has officially partnered with the General Insurance Council. 

He added that the availability of cashless treatment facilities at AIIA is expected to enhance patient confidence, expand outreach to a broader population, strengthen institutional credibility and contribute to increased patient inflow and sustainable growth of Ayush healthcare services. 

Additionally, Professor Misra had highlighted an initiative by Ministry of Ayush aimed at providing insurance related support for Ayush treatments. For the first time, the Ministry has launched a dedicated Ayush Health Insurance Helpline to assist beneficiaries in resolving insurance-related queries and to improve awareness about Ayush insurance coverage.

This helpline is aimed at ensuring individuals get smoother access to entitled benefits. It promotes wider adoption of insurance-backed Ayush healthcare. 

About AIIA

All India Institute of Ayurveda, abbreviated as AIIA, was established under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. It is an apex institute for Ayurveda. It encourages synergy between traditional Ayurvedic knowledge and modern scientific advancements. The AIIA offers postgraduate and doctoral programs across various disciplines. It is actively involved in research, drug development, standardization, quality control, safety evaluation and scientific validation of Ayurvedic medicines. 

The Institute features a 200-bed referral hospital equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities and includes 25 specialty departments, 12 clinical units and 8 interdisciplinary research laboratories. All of them are aimed at supporting patient care, education and research. Additionally, AIIA hosts an International Collaborative Centre dedicated to promotion and research of Ayurveda at a global level.

About GIC

The General Insurance Council, abbreviated as GIC, is a statutory body constituted under Section 64C of the Insurance Act, 1938. Since 2001, GIC has been functioning under the aegis of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India. 

The role of the GIC is quite important when it comes to coordinating and aligning the industry practices with regulatory requirements while protecting public interest.

The MoU signing done between AIIA and GIC marks a transformative step when it comes to advancing inclusive, integrative and insurance backed Ayurvedic healthcare in India. It reinforces the commitment of Government of India’s for strengthening Ayush systems within the healthcare framework of the nation.
