Assam Exports Karbi Anglong Ginger to London for the First Time

On 2 March 2026, during a ceremony held at Krishi Bhawan in Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam's Agriculture Minister Atul Bora officially launched the first export of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger to London. In his speech, Bora expressed his satisfaction with this milestone achievement. He emphasized the high quality of ginger that is produced in the Karbi Anglong’s hilly regions.

The Agriculture Minister said, “This is the first time that ginger is being exported. This ginger is from Karbi Anglong. Its quality is very good. We are exporting it to London. This is a matter of great happiness for us.”

APEDA General Manager Vineeta Sudhanshu said this is the first time ginger from Assam is being exported to London. She said, “This is the first time that Karbi Anglong GI ginger is going from Assam to London. In January, we organised an international buyer-seller meet where international buyers came, and our exporters participated. We regularly do these buyer-seller meets, so it is a result of that. They liked our products there and showed interest in purchasing them.”

Further, she mentioned that this is a trial consignment. If it becomes successful, further shipments will follow. “This is a first trial consignment of 1.2 metric tonnes. If this is successful and they like the quality, then we will do further shipments,” she said. This export is a significant milestone for the agriculture sector of the state of Assam, especially for the farmers who live and work in the Karbi Anglong district.

The Geographical Indication tag adds value to the product. It ensures the product’s authenticity as well as quality in the markets abroad. It is anticipated that the initiative will open new international doors for the state’s agricultural produce and improve the income of farmers in the Karbi Anglong region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kokrajhar, Assam, on 13 March 2026. Assam Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma announced this on 1 March 2026, stating that the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stones for several development projects during his visit.

“On the upcoming 13th, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit to lay the foundation stone for a project. As per the agreement, the foundation stone for another project will also be laid. However, the official list from the government has not yet been released,” he explained. Urkhao Gwra Brahma noted that Prime Minister Modi's visit comes ahead of the State Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
