Beware of Scammers Posing as TRAI Representatives

According to many recent media reports, consumers are being targeted through telephonic calls and messages by scammers pretending to be TRAI officials threatening disconnection of mobile connection for being engaged in illicit activities and for money extraction.

In Short:

  • TRAI does not contact customers for disconnection of mobile numbers or any such issues via call, SMS, or any third party.

  • Any such communication is likely fraudulent and should not be trusted or acted upon.

  • Only your Telecom Service Provider (TSP) can initiate disconnection due to billing, KYC, or misuse. You must verify any claims directly with your respective TSP.

  • Report suspicious messages or calls using the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi platform, and in case of cybercrime, call 1930 or visit the official cybercrime website.

Regarding the disconnection of a mobile number, it is known that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) does not contact customers via texts or in any other way. Additionally, TRAI has not given any third-party agency permission to get in touch with customers for these kinds of reasons.

Consequently, any contact (call, message, or notice) claiming to be from TRAI and threatening to disconnect a mobile number should be seen as a possible fraudulent attempt and should not be entertained.

The relevant Telecom Service Provider (TSP) is responsible for disconnecting any mobile number owing to billing, KYC, or misuse, if any. It is urged that citizens remain alert and avoid becoming frightened so they do not end up becoming victims of suspected fraudsters. They are also encouraged to contact the approved call centers or customer service centers of the relevant TSP in order to cross-verify such calls.

TRAI encourages the citizens to report suspected fraudulent communications using the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi platform of Department of Telecommunications (DoT). In case of instances of Cybercrime, the victims must report the incident at the designated Cybercrime helpline number '1930' or through the official website.
