TRAI revamps MyCall App

Mobile users often face problems like call drops, audio delays, poor voice quality, and calls taking too long to connect. To help address these issues, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has revamped its TRAI MyCall mobile app. The app allows users to rate their voice-calling experience and report specific network issues directly.

As per the telecom regulator, the app intends to provide consumers a bigger role in monitoring the telecom services’ quality. The feedback submitted via the app will get shared with telecom service providers as well as the TRAI in an anonymised form.

What can Users report via MyCall App?

The app lets consumers rate their calling experience on 1 to 5 star scale after they have made a call. Using the app, users can also report specific problems like echo during calls, audio delay, call drops, cross connection, voice breaking, calls taking too long to connect and one party being unable to hear the other party.

The feedback will be shared with the respective telecom service provider. This will help the provider to identify network problems and take the appropriate corrective measures.

Why did TRAI revamp MyCall?

India has more than one billion telecom subscribers. Voice calling is still one of the most basic telecom services. While the telecom companies and TRAI keep a watch on network quality via technical Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, such measurements may not always reflect the real experience of consumers.

This is where Quality of Experience (QoE) enters the picture. It shows how users actually experience a telecom service, whether a call drops, the voice breaks, there is an echo or a call takes too long to connect. The new MyCall app has been developed by the regulator to fill this gap by integrating consumer feedback and network-related information.

How does MyCall App work?

The app can prompt users to give feedback after a call automatically. This makes it easy for them to share their experiences without having to open the app manually each time. Users can also view their past ratings and feedback through an interactive map.

Another app feature Coverage Test lets users check signal strength at their location.

How will Data be used by TRAI?

The feedback will help TRAI better understand the actual calling experience on different telecom networks. This data can help telecom operators identify areas where network performance needs to be improved.

This can help operators take more targeted steps to fix network issues rather than relying only on technical network data. For TRAI, consumer feedback can provide additional information during assessment of telecom services’ quality.

Importance of Consumer Feedback

A network may satisfy specific technical QoS requirements but consumers may still experience poor voice quality, call drops or connectivity problems. TRAI’s MyCall app attempts to bridge this very gap by showing both the network’s technical performance and actual experience of users.

The new app will encourage consumers to monitor telecom service quality, according to TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti. The regulator has also urged mobile users to give their feedback regularly through the application. Currently, the TRAI MyCall app is available for download on Google Play for the Android users.
