BSNL launches Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) Services in India

On 1 January 2025, on the account of New Year, India’s premier state-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFI (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling. This service is now available to all the customers of BSNL across every telecom circle in the country. It ensures that they get smooth and high quality connectivity even in the challenging environments.

Using the VoWiFi, the customers can make as well as receive voice calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network. This service ensures that the customers get clear and reliable connectivity in regions having weak mobile signals like homes, basements, offices and remote places.

VoWiFi is an IMS-based service. It supports smooth handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Through this facility, the calls are made using the mobile no. and phone dialer of the customer, without the requirement of any third party applications.

This facility is especially useful in rural and remote regions where the mobile coverage is typically limited given that a stable Wi-Fi connection is available in such regions, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services. The VoWiFI also helps in reducing the network congestion. It is being offered free of cost. There are no additional charges for Wi-Fi calls.

The VoWiFi’s launch is an important step in the BSNL’s network modernization programme and its commitment to enhancing connectivity across the country, with a special focus on the underserved areas. Most modern smartphones can access VoWiFi.

All the customers need to do is enable the Wi-Fi calling in their handset settings. If customers want to learn about device compatibility or need assistance for VoWiFi, they can visit the BSNL customer service center near their place. Alternatively, they can contact the BSNL helpline @ 18001503.
