Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecom provider, may soon launch its own digital payment service BSNL Pay. It will be powered by the BHIM UPI framework.

Instead of being launched as a standalone application, this new service will be integrated into the Selfcare app - an existing app of BSNL. No formal date for the launch has been announced by BSNL yet.

On X platform, BSNL UP (East) Circle wrote, “BSNL Pay – Coming Soon! A new digital step by BSNL. Now UPI payments will be Secure | Swift | Smart, directly through the BSNL Selfcare App, powered by BHIM.”

It added, “Soon you’ll be able to recharge, pay bills & transfer money seamlessly with BSNL Pay.”

BSNL Reports Profit for Consecutive Quarter

For the quarter ended March 31, 2025, BSNL reported Rs. 280 crore as their net profit. This marks the telecom company’s second consecutive profitable quarter after nearly two decades. The turnaround is significant, as it follows a loss of Rs 849 crore in the same quarter the previous year.

Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said, ““For the first time in 18 years, back-to-back quarterly profits, net profits, not just operating margins, for the second time running after 2007.”

In the October-December quarter of FY25, BSNL had posted a profit after tax of Rs. 262 crore. From Rs. 5,370 in FY24, the cumulative loss of the company for the full financial year has now narrowed to approx. Rs 2,247 crore.

Shri. A. Robert Jerard Ravi, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director, attributed the company’s performance to "professional management, government support and relentless focus on both the top line and the bottom line." He said, “BSNL is not just being revived, but redefined.” He added that the company focuses on cost discipline and accelerating 4G and 5G deployments to maintain momentum.

BSNL’s Collaboration with Viasat

In July, California-based global communications company, Viasat, expanded its satellite communications operations in India by collaborating with BSNL to offer a range of satellite-based services, including consumer-focused mobile connectivity, solutions for aviation and security forces, etc.
