Central Government clears RBI Plan for Rs. 10 & Rs. 20 Polymer Notes

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI’s) proposal to introduce polymer banknotes in the denominations of Rs. 10 and Rs. 20 has received the greenlight from the Central Government.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, said the RBI had submitted a proposal to the Centre to introduce one billion Rs. 10 and one billion Rs. 20 polymer banknotes for field trials.

Field Trials to Determine Wider Rollout

He added that regular issuance of these polymer banknotes will begin only after the successful completion of the trials. Further, the minister said the RBI had informed that, as per international studies, the life span of polymer banknotes tends to be much higher than that of paper banknotes.

No Plan to Replace Paper Currency

He added that the introduction of polymer banknotes is still at a preliminary stage. Their impact on digital payments can be assessed only after they are issued regularly.

Citing the RBI, he said polymer banknotes will be issued alongside existing paper banknotes. As of now, there is no proposal to replace paper currency with polymer-based notes.
