The NSP portal is currently open for submission of applications by students. In the ongoing 2026-27 period, the selected students are required to complete a one time registration on NSP. After completion of registration, they can begin to apply for the scholarship scheme.
NMMSS full form is National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme. This scheme is being implemented by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Union Ministry of Education. It awards scholarships to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections of the society. The aim of the scheme is to prevent drop-out of students after elementary level, i.e., Class VIII and encourage them to complete their school education up to higher secondary level, i.e., Class XII. Each year, the scheme provides one lakh new scholarships for Class IX students who pass the qualifying exam conducted by State or Union Territory governments.
The scholarship can be renewed for Classes X to XII based on the student's academic performance. This scheme is applicable only to students studying in State Government, Government-aided and local body schools. The scholarship amount is Rs. 12,000 per annum for each student. NMMSS scholarships are disbursed directly into the bank accounts of selected students via electronic transfer using the Public Financial Management System under the Direct Benefit Transfer mode.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: their parental income should not exceed Rs. 3.50 lakh per annum and they must achieve a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the Class VII examination to qualify for the scholarship's selection test (this requirement is relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students).
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is implemented through NSP. This portal serves as a one-stop platform for scholarship schemes provided to students by the Government of India. As of 31 August 2026, there have been 79,398 new applications and 187,208 renewal applications submitted.
All eligible students are encouraged to complete their scholarship applications on NSP within extended deadline. Additionally, students who have already submitted their applications must ensure that their applications are verified by concerned Institute, District or State Nodal Officers, as applicable.
There are two levels of verification for scholarship applications of selected students on the NSP portal. The Level-1 (L1) verification is with Institute Nodal Officer (INO). The other level, i.e., Level-2 (L2) is with the District Nodal Officer (DNO). The last date to the INO level verification is 15 October 2026. For the DNO level verification, the deadline is 31 October 2026.
