Delhi Govt Begins Issuing New Ration Cards, Check Eligibility and Documents

In Delhi, the process of issuing new ration cards resumed on a large scale from 15 May 2026, putting an end to a wait of approximately 13 years. A few days ago, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said the government had cancelled about 7.72 lakh invalid ration cards, and invited fresh online applications. She said, in Delhi, no ration cards were issued in the last 13 years.

Delhi CM Gupta said, "After an intensive audit, the government removed 1.44 lakh beneficiaries not fulfilling the income criterion, 35,800 who did not receive ration, 29,580 who died, while 23,394 ration cards were found to be duplicates.”

She emphasized on the fact that the Delhi Government is implementing PM Modi’s Antyodaya vision to make sure the welfare benefits reach those who truly need them the most.

New Income Eligibility Limit for Ration Cards in India

The Chief Minister announced that annual family income eligibility limit for ration cards has been raised from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.20 lakh under Delhi Food Security Rules 2026. This change aims to include more poor and middle-class families in the welfare program.

Possibility of Further Increase in Limit

She mentioned that the government is considering further raising the limit to Rs. 2.50 lakh. Discussions at the Cabinet level have been positive. It is expected that a final decision will come soon.

Documents Required for a New Ration Card in Delhi

Under the revised framework for ration cards in Delhi, the applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Aadhaar card

  • Proof of residence

  • Latest income certificate

  • Aadhaar details of all family members.

How to Apply for a New Ration Card in Delhi?

All services related to ration cards, including new applications for such cards and changes to family member details, are now available online. Citizens can apply from home or visit nearby facilitation centers. Online applications for new ration cards and for adding family members were reopened on the e-District portal starting May 15.

Earlier applications that were pending have also been returned to applicants via their login accounts, allowing them to update their details and resubmit the forms along with a valid family income certificate and any other relevant documents.

Previous Self-Declaration Framework

In the past, family income details were primarily accepted based on self-declarations. This system allowed some ineligible individuals to enter the program while often excluding genuine beneficiaries.

Delhi CM stated, “For 13 years, the rights of Delhi's poor remained effectively locked away. Previous governments turned the ration system into a vehicle for politics and corruption. The process of issuing new ration cards had virtually come to a standstill, depriving lakhs of deserving families of their rightful benefits. Our government is committed to replacing that system with a transparent and people-centric mechanism so that every eligible person receives their entitlement with dignity.”
