The Delhi government has announced the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana. This scheme will replace the Ladli Scheme once it comes into effect in April 2026. The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana is basically Ladli Scheme’s redesigned version that promises structured financial support to girls from their birth till their graduation. The intent behind the Ladkpati Bitiya scheme is to prevent the school dropouts of girls due to financial hardship by linking payments directly to educational milestones and transferring funds digitally to female beneficiaries.
During the announcement of this initiative of the Delhi Government, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta mentioned that the new framework addresses the gaps that slowed benefits under the previous model while ensuring transparent disbursal in a timely manner via direct online transfers. While unveiling the scheme, the Delhi CM said, “The objective is clear, no girl should leave education because of a lack of funds.”
Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana, or the Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme, is CM Rekha Gupta-led Delhi Government’s scheme. It is an upgraded version of the Ladli Scheme that provides phased financial assistance at the key stages of a girl’s education. Under the scheme, the Delhi government will deposit up to Rs. 56,000.
With the accrued interest, the total amount is expected to exceed Rs. 1 lakh by the time of maturity. All funds will be credited directly into the beneficiary’s bank account, which is linked to their Aadhaar number.
The Ladli Scheme was launched in 2008, with the mission to support education of girls. However, according to the officials, serious implementation gaps arose after the new government took office. As per the official data, more than 1.86 lakh maturity accounts remained unclaimed for years, delaying payments to beneficiaries.
The government has since begun addressing this backlog. Rs. 90 crore has already been disbursed to around 30,000 beneficiaries. Another Rs. 100 crore is expected to be released soon for 41,000 additional girls. In total, Rs. 190 crore is being delivered to eligible beneficiaries.
Here is the eligibility criteria for the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana of the Delhi Government:
The girl child must be born in Delhi.
The annual family income must be below Rs. 1.20 lakh.
A maximum of two girl children per family can apply.
The family must have resided in Delhi for at least three years.
Under the new scheme, the funds will be disbursed in installments tied to education milestones:
Rs. 11,000 will be disbursed at birth of the girl child.
Rs. 5,000 will be disbursed on admission to Class I.
Rs. 5,000 will be given on admission to Class VI.
Rs. 5,000 will be disbursed on admission to Class IX.
Rs. 5,000 will be provided on passing Class X.
Rs. 5,000 will be provided on admission to Class XII.
Rs. 20,000 will be released in phases during graduation or diploma courses.
The total accumulated amount will earn interest. It’ll mature into over Rs. 1 lakh.
Funds can be withdrawn when:
The beneficiary passes Class XII and turns 18, or
She completes her graduation or diploma course and turns 21.
If the beneficiary fails to meet the prescribed milestones, such as not completing Class XII by age 21, the deposited amount along with interest shall be returned to the government.
The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana Registration can be completed at several stages in a girl child's life:
Within one year of birth of the girl, or
At the time of admission to Class 1, 6, 9, 11 or a recognized graduation/diploma course
This scheme now extends to girls pursuing higher education in government-recognized institutions across India including University Grants Commission affiliated colleges. Spl. provisions are available for girls who are educated in govt protected childcare institutions.
The Lakhpati Bitiya registration process will be conducted entirely online, which eliminates the need for physical visits to government offices. This girl child financial assistance scheme of the Delhi Govt is set to be launched on 1 April 2026. It will have an initial estimated budget of Rs. 160 crore and there is a possibility of additional funding if the same is deemed necessary.
By linking financial support to educational milestones and transitioning to wholly digital transfers, the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana aims to establish a systematic safety net for girls who reside within Delhi. The scheme will support them from their birth through their higher education.
