A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Voltas Limited, a Tata Enterprise. The MoU’s aim is to facilitate industry-start-up collaboration in the cooling and smart appliance ecosystem. DPIIT Director Dr. Sumeet Kumar Jarangal and Managing Director of Voltas Limited Mr. Mukundan Menon signed the MoU. Senior officials from both organizations were present at the signing event.

This collaboration between the Government of India and a leading player in the consumer durables sector intends to engage start-ups working on technologies across domains like heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), advanced control systems, power electronics, artificial intelligence and machine learning-based diagnostics, IoT-enabled smart appliances and digitalization in operations pertaining to manufacturing and service.

As part of the initiative, the Startup India initiative under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will be collaborating with Voltas Limited to organize innovation challenges through the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge and to conduct hackathons focused on industry-related problem statements.

During announcement, DPIIT Joint Secretary Shri Sanjiv had stated that this collaboration aligns with efforts made by our government for enhancing engagement between industries and startups, particularly in emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing sectors. He emphasized on the fact that such partnerships can provide startups with valuable opportunities to develop as well as test solutions that meet industry needs.

Under this partnership, DPIIT via Startup India initiative will work with Voltas Limited to identify start-ups that align with emerging industry requirements. Certain selected start-ups may receive mentorship and technical guidance as well as access to testing infrastructure and opportunities for market linkages to support their product development.

Areas of focus may include energy-efficient cooling systems, air-quality monitoring and filtration technologies, advanced inverter controls, predictive maintenance solutions, refrigerant safety system and digital tools for installation and servicing.

For product validation and technology integration, the selected start-ups may also partake in structured Proof-of-Concept programmes with Voltas engineering teams. Through the collaboration, field trials may be facilitated via Voltas’s service network to support solutions’ testing and refinement.
