After evaluation of 13 applications received in the fourth round under the PLI Scheme for White Goods, five applicants have been selected provisionally, with a committed investment of Rs. 863 crore, all engaged in the manufacturing of air conditioner (AC) components. It is anticipated that these five companies will generate a total production value of Rs. 8,337.24 crore and create 1,799 additional direct jobs by the fiscal year 2027-28.

In total, 85 companies have been selected under the PLI Scheme for White Goods (which includes Air Conditioners and LED Lights). These companies are expected to make investments of Rs. 11,198 crore, resulting in cumulative production worth Rs. 1,90,050 crore over the scheme period.

Additionally, eight applicants have been referred to the Committee of Experts for a more detailed examination and recommendations. Details of the provisionally selected applicants are included in the Annexure. This initiative would significantly enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and drive the sector’s economic growth.

Under the scheme, manufacturers of Air Conditioners will produce components like compressors, copper tubes (both plain and grooved), control assemblies for indoor and outdoor units (IDUs and ODUs), heat exchangers and BLDC motors among others. Similarly, for LED Lights, components will be manufactured in India, including LED chip packaging, LED drivers, LED engines, LED light management systems and metallized films for capacitors among others.

It was on 7 April 2021 that the Union Cabinet gave its approval for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods (Air Conditioners and LED Lights). The scheme had a total outlay of Rs. 6,238 crore, to be implemented from FY 2021-22 to FY 2028-29. Subsequently, the DPIIT notified the scheme on 16 April 2021.

The Production Linked Incentive Scheme for White Goods intends to create a robust domestic ecosystem ACs and LED lights industry and position India as global supply chains’ integral part. The incentives offered under the scheme range from 6% to 4% on a reducing basis on incremental sales for a period of five years, following the base year and a one-year gestation period. From the current 20-25%, Domestic Value Addition is expected to increase to 75-80%.
