FSSAI seeks explanation from Blinkit over curd-related illness complaint

India’s food regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked for an explanation from the quick commerce company Blinkit regarding a complaint from an individual who reportedly became ill after consuming curd ordered from their platform.

What Exactly Happened?

FSSAI received a written complaint from the person who had to seek medical attention after they consumed curd purchased via Blinkit. The complaint also included a medical prescription. On May 29, FSSAI sent a letter to the CEO of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd as well as to the person in charge of operations after receiving this complaint. The complainant reportedly experienced severe stomach ache and diarrhea shortly after consuming curd and required medical attention.

Quite recently, the FSSAI has received numerous complaints, either via social media or official representations, regarding the supply of unhygienic, spoiled or damaged food by sellers on the Blinkit e-commerce platform, according to sources. The FSSAI has instructed Blinkit to provide an explanation and submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR).

Responsibility of FBOs under FSS Act, 2006

Under the food safety law and FSSAI regulations, e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) must adhere to the provisions outlined in Section 26 and Section 27 of the FSS Act, 2006. These provisions state that a food business operator is responsible for the safety of any food item they manufacture, store or distribute.

Suo-Moto Cognizance by FSSAI

Earlier this month, the FSSAI asked for an explanation from Blinkit concerning consumer complaints about the sale of poor-quality eggs on its platform.

The FSSAI took 'suo-motu cognizance' of consumer complaints raised on social media. The food regulator has also issued a notice to the state-owned IRCTC after noticing a video on social media that showed utensils being washed in a train compartment’s toilet area.
