Government of India Invites Applications For Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026

The Government of India is currently inviting applications for Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026. This flagship initiative of the government aims to attract leading Indian Origin researchers, scientists and professionals from across the globe to enhance research and innovation ecosystem of India. Eligible candidates who are interested in the scheme can submit their applications online through official portal @ https://pmrc.education.gov.in/ until 15 July 2026. 

What is Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme?

The Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026, abbreviated as PMRC scheme 2026, has been launched by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. The scheme aims to attract talented researchers and experts of Indian origin who are currently working overseas and provide them opportunities so they can work in leading Indian government higher education institutions and national research laboratories of the nation.

The initiative seeks to promote high quality research, innovation and academic mentorship. It also aims to strengthen India's research ecosystem and support the national visions of Atmanirbhar Bharat as well as Viksit Bharat 2047.

Goals of PM Research Chair Scheme

The goals of the scheme as follows:

  • One of the primary goals of this scheme is to encourage advanced research and innovation in priority sectors.

  • Another goal of the scheme is to provide guidance and mentorship to researchers and students.

  • It aims to improve research skills and strengthen academic capabilities.

  • One of the key objectives of PMRC scheme is to promote cooperation between universities, research institutions, and industries.

  • It also aims to support the practical/commercial application and transfer of research and technology.

  • Additionally, the scheme aims to strengthen the overall research environment in educational and research institutions.

The thematic areas covered under PMRC scheme may be reviewed and updated from time to time so as to ensure alignment with national priorities and emerging global scientific developments.

Types of Fellows under PMRC Scheme 2026

The scheme aims to support at least 120 researchers over five years (2026-27 to 2030-31) under the following categories:

  • Young Research Fellows (YRF): Researchers with up to 5 years of experience after completion of their PhD abroad.

  • Senior Fellows (SF): Researchers with 5 to less than 10 years of post-PhD experience abroad.

  • Research Chairs (RC): Researchers with 10+ years of post-PhD experience abroad.

Applicants should have a strong research background, including quality publications, patents, citations and global recognition.

Duties of PMRC Fellows

Selected fellows under the scheme will be required to fulfill the following duties:

  • They shall carry out research projects in their chosen area.

  • They shall work with Host Institutions on research and academic activities.

  • The selected fellows shall teach students and help develop academic programs.

  • They must guide PhD scholars, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students.

  • Further, they shall encourage collaborations with international institutions and industries.

  • They shall also support innovation, patents and the practical use of research findings.

  • Additionally, they must submit regular progress reports as required.

Funding and Benefits of PM Research Chair Scheme 2026

The PM Research Chair Scheme offers financial assistance to eligible individuals so as to support research and related activities. The assistance may include the following:

  • Annual fellowship support ranging from Rs 0.15 crore to Rs 0.60 crore.

  • One-time research grants of up to Rs 5 crore, depending on the category.

  • Additionally allowances and operational support. 

Who Can Apply?

The following individuals are eligible to apply:

  • Researchers of Indian origin, i.e., Indian citizens, OCI cardholders and PIOs.

  • Professionals working in well-known foreign universities, research institutions, labs or industries.

  • Eligible candidates currently living and working in India.

It is important to note that the selected fellows must be willing to work in-person at the assigned Host Institution in India for up to five years, subject to satisfactory performance.

PMRC Scheme Registration Process

To register for the PM Research Chair Scheme, the following steps must be completed:

Step 1: Visit the official website @ https://pmrc.education.gov.in/.

Step 2: Once you are on the homepage, click on ‘Apply Now’ button.

Step 3: Then, sign up as a ‘Fellow’.

Step 4: Enter name and email address.

Step 5: After that, click on the ‘Proceed’ button.

Step 6: Then, set up a password and proceed with registration steps.

Step 7: Then, you must complete the application form with necessary academic, professional and research details. 

Step 8: Finally, move to submit your proposal and await review.
