Gurugram Bar Bans Non-Lawyers From White Shirt, Black Trousers

The Gurugram District Bar Association has passed a rule banning anyone who isn’t a registered lawyer or an authorized law trainee from wearing white shirts and black trousers inside the court premises. A senior member of the association explained that this professional dress is now only allowed for official lawyers and authorized trainees. The reason behind the rule is that non lawyers/unrecognized law trainees were often seen wearing this outfit in the district court.

This led to confusion and sometimes even disrupted the court’s dignity and order. To keep things respectful and clear, the bar association has asked everyone to strictly follow this new dress code. The rule states: “No other person, including clerks, brokers, litigants, or the general public, will be allowed to wear advocate’s dress i.e. white shirt and black pants in any part of the court premises. The Bar Association will coordinate with the court administration and security staff to ensure the dress code. Violation of this can also attract a fine of Rs 5,000.”

Advocate Rahul Dhankar, secretary of the Gurugram District Bar Association, said the main goal is to stop people pretending to be lawyers to cheat clients. “These people wear lawyer’s clothes to fool clients by promising legal help and documentation,” he said. Security guards at the court gates have been told to check IDs carefully to confirm who is a real lawyer or authorized trainee using Bar Council ID cards or other valid certificates.

Local lawyers have welcomed the rule saying it will help prevent fraud and ensure clients get safe and trustworthy legal services. Advocate Kulbhushan Bhardwaj, former president of the Gurugram District Bar Association, said, “The Bar Association has passed this resolution with the objective of maintaining the sanctity, identity and professional distinction of the legal fraternity within the court premises. Dress code decorum for advocates is for a reason and anyone trying to misuse this must be punished.”
