In the list of world’s most powerful passports, the Indian passport has jumped to the 75th spot. Last year, its position was 85th. This is seen as a great improvement from the previous year. Now, the citizens of India can travel to 56 countries without applying for a visa in advance, including options for visa-free entry, e-visa or visa on arrival.
The latest ranking of India is still below its 2006 ranking, when the country’s passport was ranked as the 71st most powerful passport in the world. It lags behind many countries in terms of visa-free access. Indian passport holders are able to enter fewer destinations compared to passport holders of several nations.
The Henley Passport Index, published by Henley & Partners, ranks 199 passports according to how many of 227 destinations their holders can visit without getting a visa before traveling. It uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is updated every month. Governments and travelers use it to understand how strong a passport is.
