MCD Launches Property Tax Amnesty Scheme

On 21 May 2025, the Municipal Corporate of Delhi (MCD) announced the launch of a one-time property tax amnesty scheme under SUNIYO for the present financial year 2025-2026. SUNIYO full form is Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana. The Bharatiya Janata Party, after almost three years, regained control of the civic body and the decision was made at the first House session.

Property owners can pay off their debts under the scheme by making a single payment that covers the principal for 2025–2026 as well as the preceding five years (starting in 2020–2021). All penalties and interest linked with unpaid debts prior to 2020–2021 would be waived off under the property tax amnesty scheme, according to MCD.

The AAP brought up several topics during the five hour debate. AAP leaders criticized the imposition of higher user fees for door to door garbage pickup and questioned the selection of the new Leader of the House. They said that while AAP was in power, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar made these choices on his own without consulting anyone.

As public disapproval of extra civic levies is growing, Raja Iqbal Singh announced in his first General House meeting as Mayor that user charges related to waste collection will no longer be included in the property tax bill.

In the House, Mahesh Kumar - the former AAP mayor and Ankush Narang - the party's new leader of the opposition, chanted slogans. In response to the disagreement, Mayor Singh formally appointed Satya Sharma of the BJP as the new Leader of the House.

Mukesh Goel previously held the position under the AAP-led MCD. Due to claimed incompetence and negligence within the civic body, Goel left the AAP and is now one of 16 rebel councillors who have joined the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
