MS Dhoni applies for 'Captain Cool' trademark

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of the best cricket captains in Indian sports history, has filed a trademark application for the name ‘Captain Cool’. This name has been used for years by his fans and media to describe his ice-cool style of captainship. The reason why the former India captain filed for trademark is to acquire exclusive rights over the use of ‘Captain Cool’ for coaching services and sports training centres.

As per official portal of Trade Marks Registry, on 16 June 2025, the ‘Captain Cool’ trademark was published in the Trademark Journal. Press Trust of India (PTI), a news agency, mentioned that MS Dhoni’s application for ‘Captain Cool’ is currently “accepted and advertised”.

Even MS Dhoni appears to be aware that no one else owns the word "Captain Cool" as much as he does. The trademark is registered under the category of sports coaching and services, sports training and sports training facilities.

PTI reported that the trademark application for the same phrase was also filed by another company called Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited. However, the status of that application is being displayed as ‘rectification filed’.

Achievements of Former Captain Dhoni

Having guided the team to the Champions Trophy in 2013, the 50-over World Cup victory in 2011 and the T20 World Cup victory in 2007, Dhoni is among the most successful Indian captains to have ever taken leadership in cricket’s history.

India even reached the semi-final of the 2015 ODI World Cup and the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup under his leadership. All these achievements imply that MS Dhoni has been a great leader.

How is Trademark Registered in India?

If someone wants to register a trademark in India, it is essential that they file an application with the TM Office. Afterwards, the application is evaluated to determine whether it’s in a proper format. Upon clarification of the doubts of the examiner, the trademark is accepted and published in Trade Marks Journal.
