Government of India Announces Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025

On 26 October 2025, the Government of India announced Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025, which is the nation’s highest recognition for outstanding and inspiring contributions made by scientists, technologists, and innovators in areas of science, technology, and technology-led innovation.

The Government of India came up with the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar to recognize and promote groundbreaking research and inspiring achievements in the fields of science and technology. The awards were conferred in four categories:

1. Vigyan Ratna (VR) award: To recognize lifetime achievements & contributions made in any field of science and technology.

2. Vigyan Shri (VS) award: To recognize distinguished contributions made under any field of science and technology.

3. Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB) award: To recognize & encourage young scientists up to the age of 45 years who have made an exceptional contribution in any field of science and technology.

4. Vigyan Team (VT) award: Awarded to a team comprising three or more scientists/researchers/innovators who have made an exceptional contribution working in a team in any field of science and technology.

The above-mentioned awards were conferred across the following 13 areas:

1. Physics

2. Chemistry

3. Biological Sciences

4. Mathematics & Computer Science

5. Earth Science

6. Medicine

7. Engineering Sciences

8. Agricultural Science

9. Environmental Science

10. Technology & Innovation

11. Atomic Energy

12. Space Science and Technology

13. Other allied fields. 

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar reaffirms the Indian Government’s dedication for promoting science excellence and technological leadership for national development.

Through the dedicated portal https://awards.gov.in/, the nominations were invited for Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 between 4 October 2024 and 17 November 2024. The nominations were carefully scrutinized by a panel led by key scientific leaders, including the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Chairperson of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Committee, Secretaries of Science Departments, heads of academies and domain experts coordinated by the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Secretariat.

The awardees of Puraskar are as follows:

1. Vigyan Ratna: Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar (Physics) Posthumously

2. Vigyan Shri: Dr. Gyanendra Pratap Singh (Agricultural Science); Dr. Yusuf Mohammad Sheikh (Atomic Energy); Dr. K Thangaraj (Biological Sciences); Prof. Pradeep Thalappil (Chemistry); Prof. Aniruddha Bhalchandra Pandit (Engineering Sciences); Dr. S Venkata Mohan (Environmental Science); Prof. Mahan Mj (Mathematics and Computer Science); Shri Jayan N (Space Science and Technology)

3. The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar aims to honor the nation's visionaries in domains of science and technology with the goal of inspiring the next generation, strengthening the research ecosystem and propelling India toward becoming a global leader in science and technology innovation. The award ceremony will be scheduled in due course and details will be communicated separately to the awardees.
