Elon Musk’s automobile company Tesla is going to launch its first store in India soon. According to news agency Reuters, Tesla will launch its “experience centre” in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on 15 July, 2025. Tesla’s centre will be opened in Bandra Kurla Complex, and mark Musk-led company’s first physical presence in the country.
Five Model Y vehicles have already made their arrival in Mumbai from the Shanghai-based factory of Tesla, as per a Bloomberg report. At present, Model Y vehicles rank as the most popular EVs across the world. The cars were declared at 2.77 million rupees and were subject to approx. 2.1 million rupees in import duties. The heavy duty is a result of India’s 70% tariff on fully-built cars’ import.
Tesla’s entry into the Indian market has been in the works for several years. Elon Musk’s company was focused on lobbying for reduced import duties during negotiations. Although the company’s store launch will mark the start of its operations in India, it is not keen on manufacturing the automobile parts in the country.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries, HD Kumaraswamy, told news agency ANI that Tesla only intends to expand its showrooms in India. He said, "Tesla, we are not actually expecting from them, they are only to start showrooms. They are not interested in manufacturing in India."
