Highlights from Raj Shamani Podcast with Vijay Mallya

Let’s discuss the Raj Shamani Vijay Mallya Podcast highlights. During the podcast, Mallya addresses various aspects of the legal challenges he faced, his departure from India and his airline’s collapse. Also, he spoke about being referred to as a “Chor” (Thief).

He said, "Call me a fugitive for not going to India post-March (2016). I didn’t run away, I flew out of India on a pre-scheduled visit. Fair enough, I did not return for reasons that I consider valid, so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead, but where is the ‘chor’ coming from… where is the ‘chori’?"

Mallya, who has been residing in the UK since 2016, shared his views on whether his stay abroad has aggravated his legal troubles. "If I have assurance of a fair trial and a dignified existence in India, you may be right, but I don’t," he stated. When asked if he would consider returning to India with such an assurance, he said, "If I am assured, absolutely. I will think about it seriously.”

The Vijay Mallya Interview with Raj Shamani, titled ‘Vijay Mallya Podcast: Rise & Downfall Of Kingfisher Airlines, Loans & RCB’, featured Mallya asserting that he had made “four different settlement offers to banks between 2012 and 2015” following the collapse of Kingfisher Airlines, but none were accepted. “It was always my intention to settle. Never did I say I didn’t want to pay,” he told Shamani. He also recalled meeting the then chairperson of the State Bank of India with a proposal, adding, “They wanted Rs 14,000 crore which is why they didn’t accept.”

Mallya said he never borrowed a rupee personally. At one point in Vijay Mallya Podcast Raj Shamani, Mallya showed documents for the Debt Recovery Tribunal in Bengaluru as an effort to support his claims. He clarified, "Vijay Mallya has not borrowed a single rupee from anybody ever. Kingfisher Airlines, the company, borrowed - and I was the guarantor. There’s a big difference.”

He restated that his personal shares and collateral, including the Kingfisher name and properties, are included in the recovery sum. He said, “Nobody dreams of sharing values. That’s your answer to all the narratives.” Mallya also took advantage of the opportunity to finally apologize to the staff of Kingfisher Airlines.

In February, Mallya filed a plea with the Karnataka High Court seeking clarification regarding the loan recovery measures taken by the banks. As per a report by ANI, his lawyer, senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, argued that even though around Rs 6,200 crore had been repaid, banks had already recovered Rs 14,000 crore. Mallya was requesting a comprehensive statement from the banks detailing the total recovered amount.

He currently faces legal proceedings on charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering, with his companies Kingfisher Airlines and United Breweries (Holdings) Limited under investigation for alleged financial irregularities.
