A large share of the Indian eggs gets exported to countries in the Middle East like the UAE, Oman and Qatar. In addition to this, the country also exports eggs to Maldives and certain African countries.

In India's egg exports, Namakkal (known as India’s “Egg City”), in Tamil Nadu, plays a key role. It is one of the largest egg-producing hubs in the country. It supplies a significant portion of export-quality eggs.

Licenses & Registrations Required for Egg Export Business

The following licenses and registrations are required to start egg export business in India. Make sure to get all the licenses and registrations mentioned in a timely manner to avoid penalties and run a smooth business. :-

Business Registration

It’s not exactly necessary for you to register a business. You can choose to operate an unregistered business such as a sole proprietorship (where you are the sole owner of business) or partnership firm (where you and another partner or several partners own the business). However, the main challenge is that in both these models, there is no separate legal identity between the business and its owners. This means the owners are personally liable for all debts, losses and legal obligations of the business.

This is why we recommend business registration. You can choose from various business models like limited liability partnership, private limited company, one person company and public limited company. All these models require registration with the Registrar of Companies, Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Limited liability partnership is different from a traditional partnership. It offers limited liability protection and is a separate legal entity from its owners. A private limited company also offers limited liability protection and is a separate legal entity from its owners.

Additionally, it provides better credibility, easier access to funding, and greater scalability for long-term business growth. If you want to operate your business alone, you can go for a one person company. In this model, the benefit is that you can be the sole owner of the business and also its director.

A public limited company is ideal for those who do not have any restrictions on the maximum number of shareholders and want to launch an IPO in the future to raise capital.

IEC License

IEC Licence stands for Import Export Code License. Basically, IEC is a 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Every business engaging in import or export activities must possess an IEC, unless specifically exempted. To secure an IEC License, you need to visit the official portal of DGFT and apply there.

Once you finally secure it, you need to update the core business details annually to maintain IEC’s active status. If you need assistance in IEC registration, you can connect with our consultants at Registrationwala.

GST Registration

Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration is a mandatory requirement for businesses in India if their annual business turnover exceeds Rs. 40 lakhs for goods or Rs. 20 lakhs for services.

However, in case of export business, GST registration is a mandatory requirement regardless of the annual business turnover. This means each and every business must secure GST registration to engage in export business activities, unless specially exempted.

To secure this registration, the process needs to be completed online via the official GST portal. Once issued, GST registration remains valid for a lifetime, unless cancelled or surrendered.

FSSAI License

FSSAI License is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which was established under the FSS Act, 2006. In India, businesses that are engaged in manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, transportation or selling food, must possess a valid FSSAI license. There are three different types of FSSAI licenses, i.e., (i) FSSAI Basic License, (ii) FSSAI State License, (iii) FSSAI Central License.

For egg export business, FSSAI Central License is generally the required license. To apply for the license, you must file an application via the official FOSCOS portal.

APEDA Registration

APEDA stands for Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. It is essential to secure APEDA registration if you want to export eggs from India. This is because eggs are "scheduled products" under the APEDA Act, 1985, making APEDA registration mandatory for egg exporters.

To secure this registration, you need to visit the DGFT portal and apply there. Once you secure the registration, it’ll remain valid for five years from the date of issue.

Conclusion

To export eggs from India, you need several registrations and licenses, such as company registration, IEC license, GST registration, FSSAI license, and APEDA registration. Apart from these, you also require essential documents like a Business PAN card, bank account and proof, Aadhaar card and other related documents.
