To mark 68 years since the Copyright Act 1957 came into effect, the Copyright Office under the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks, is joining hands with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, to host a special commemorative event.

The event will take place today i.e., Wednesday, 4 June 2025, from 4:30 PM onwards. The venue of the event is Seminar Halls 2 & 3 at Kamala Devi Complex in India International Centre (New Delhi). This year’s theme is called Reform in Copyright Act in the Digital Era. The theme will result in engaging conversations around how copyright law keeps evolving to meet the demands of our growing digital world.

This event is more than just a celebration. It offers a space for creators, legal experts, policymakers and other stakeholders to come together and discuss the challenges and opportunities that the cyber space brings to copyright protection as well as enforcement.

As a result of digitization of the registration process, copyright awareness has grown tremendously. Approx. 3.5 lakh works have been registered as of 2025. This is a clear sign that shows that more and more creators are taking steps to protect their work.

Since the Copyright Act was introduced in 1957, it has played an irreplaceable role in protecting the rights of authors, artists, musicians, filmmakers and many others. Over the years, it has been updated to keep up with new technologies and global standards. What started as a law meant for traditional media has steadily adapted to address the challenges of the digital age.
