On 18 July, the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, inaugurated the Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh - a health, fitness and wellness space for female employees of the Department. It is a first-of-its kind initiative that institutionalizes the workplace within the government corridors.

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, formally inaugurated the space in the presence of Law Secretary, Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, senior officials of the department and a major gathering of female officials. The inauguration ceremony included ribbon cutting and walkthrough of the newly developed health and wellness space for women.

The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh is located within the Shastri Bhawan, and has been carved out in a garage space that was previously not in use. Now, the space is a wellness center with gym equipment and private lactation room for nursing mothers. The department expects the space to promote physical fitness, work life balance and mental wellbeing for female employees of the Department of Legal Affairs.

Union Minister Shri Meghwal, who spoke at the launch, commended the Department for the effort and called it a significant step towards Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's "Hum Fit Toh India Fit" campaign. In order to create a really fit and inclusive India, he emphasized the importance of women employees' well-being and urged them to utilize the space to the fullest.

The Law Secretary Dr. Anju Rathi Rana discussed the initiative's deeper meaning as well as the daily struggles women have in balancing their personal and professional obligations with their health. She said, “women often set aside their own well-being while caring for others. This space is a gentle reminder that self-care is not selfish, it is foundational to empowerment.”

Further, she added that the department stays dedicated to developing an inclusive work environment that values its employees’ well-being. The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh isn’t just a wellness room. It’s much more than that. It is a firm shift in how we imagine the typical government offices. These offices are more than spaces of administration. They’re workplaces that acknowledge the needs of those who serve them.

The new initiative by the Legal Affairs Department aligns with the Fit India Movement and Viksit Bharat vision of the Government of India. It places integrity, health and inclusion at the institutional culture’s heart.
