"Meri Panchayat" App Wins WSIS Champion Award 2025

The Meri Panchayat App, a transformative domestic mobile application, has received global recognition via prestigious World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2025 Champion Award under Action Line Category: Cultural Diversity and Identity, Linguistic Diversity and Local Content.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) conferred the award as part of the WSIS initiative at the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025. As a WSIS Prizes 2025 Champion Project, Meri Panchayat app showcases the international distinction of India's digital governance framework. 

At a formal ceremony held at New Delhi, the WSIS Champion Certificate was given to the Union Minister of Panchayati Raj, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh. Shri Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary of the Ministry of Public Relations, and Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, also graced the occasion.

The honor was conferred during the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as part of the WSIS initiative. Meri Panchayat, as a WSIS Prizes 2025 Champion Project, symbolizes the global excellence of India’s digital governance model. 

Union Minister, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh praised the Meri Panchayat initiative for helping in improving the citizen-centric governance via digital mode. He also pointed out the need to take advantage of such tools to improve transparency, boost participatory democracy and close the information and knowledge divide at the ground level.

The World Summit on Information Society (WSIS)+20 High-Level Event 2025 took place from 7 to 11 July 2025 at Geneva, Switzerland. The event is also known as WSIS Forum 2025. The co-hosts of the event were International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Swiss Confederation. The co-organizers were ITU, UNESCO, UNCTAD and UNDP.

Twenty years after the inception of the original WSIS, the forum offers a worldwide platform for evaluating advancements, tackling new issues and determining the path forward for creating inclusive information societies. At the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025 in Geneva, on 10 July 2025, Ms. Sunita Jain, Senior Director of NIC / NIC-MoPR, accepted the prestigious Champion Award for "Meri Panchayat" on behalf of the Indian government.

About Meri Panchayat App and its Key Features

Meri Panchayat App was launched by the Hon'ble Minister of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Shri Giriraj Singh, on 21 August 2023. It is an m-Governance Platform for the Panchayats of India. 

The initiative empowers about 2.5 million elected representatives and approx. 950 million rural residents across India’s 265,000 Gram Panchayats and plays an important role in transformation of rural governance via digital inclusion and transparency. 

Meri Panchayat App is supported by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and aligns with the Indian government’s broader goal of Digital India.

Here are the key features of this application:

  • It gives details about real-time panchayat budgets, development plans, payments and receipts.

  • The app features a multilingual interface that supports over 12 Indian languages that promise inclusivity for individuals belonging to different parts of the country.

  • It gives insight into Gram Panchayat Development Plans and allows to track project proposals.

  • It provides information regarding the elected representatives and functionaries.

  • Gives individuals details related to the public infrastructure and civic services in their panchayat.

  • Additionally, it provides weather forecasting at Gram Panchayat-level.

  • The app allows citizens to offer new project proposals, review and rate implemented works and get access to decisions and agendas of the Gram Sabha. This allows to strengthen participatory democracy as well as civic engagement.  

  • In addition to the above-mentioned features, the app also provides social audit tools, grievance redressal with geo-tagged and geo-fenced features, and fund utilization data.
