Nitin Gadkari Introduces New FASTag Annual Plan: Here’s What You Need to Know

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced a new FASTag annual plan. This new plan comes with a few key additions to how FASTag was previously used. Now, under this plan, users of FASTag can recharge with a minimum amount of Rs. 3,000. This recharge will stay valid for either 1 year or 200 trips (whichever comes first). This updated system, particularly designed for private, non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps and vans, aims to provide a solution to several long-standing issues that commuters face at toll plazas.

According to the minister, this plan could help users save at least Rs. 7,000 per pass. The average toll cost per trip is expected to come down to just Rs. 15. The plan is set to roll out starting 15 August 2025.

Is the FASTag Annual Plan Mandatory?

To clarify, this new annual plan is completely optional. It’s not a mandatory change. It is just an additional option designed to make travel smoother and reduce congestion at toll booths.

If you don’t opt for the Annual Pass, nothing changes. You can continue using your existing FASTag as usual and pay toll charges at the regular rates for each trip.

FASTag Annual Plan's Price and Validity

As mentioned earlier, the plan for FASTag begins from Rs. 3,000 per year. It remains valid either for 200 toll trips or for one year from the date of activation, whichever comes first. If you hit the 200-trip limit before the year ends, what you can do is simply purchase another annual pass.

The pass is linked to a specific vehicle and can’t be transferred to another. At toll plazas that charge based on distance or location, each trip is counted individually. So, a return journey would be considered two trips. For closed toll systems, one complete entry and exit is counted as a single trip.

It’s also worth noting that the Ministry has stated this fee could be revised each year, with any price changes taking effect from 1 April annually. Depending on future adjustments, the cost may go up or down.

How to Activate the FASTag Annual Plan

To activate the plan, your vehicle and the associated FASTag must first be verified for eligibility. Once approved, you can pay the Rs. 3,000 annual fee for the 2025-2026 year via the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the official NHAI website. Upon making the payment, the Annual Pass will be added to your FASTag account and you will start receiving SMS alerts regarding your pass' status.

If you already have a FASTag, there’s no need to get a new one. You can simply add the Annual Pass to your existing tag as long as it’s properly affixed to your vehicle’s windshield, linked to a valid registration number and not blacklisted.
