The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, or the APEDA, is a statutory body established by the Government of India. It was incepted in 1985 under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act of the Central Government. The primary role of APEDA in India’s Agricultural Trade is to promote the export of Agricultural and Processed Food products from India to the international market.

Each product has been included in the Second Schedule of the Indian APEDA Act of 1987. The Government also entrusts the APEDA with the responsibility of monitoring sugar imports into India as well.

APEDA also functions as the Secretariat to the NAB, i.e., the National Accreditation Board. The APEDA is responsible for implementing the ACB or Accreditation of the Certification Bodies under the National Programme for Organic Production for organic exports. 

For export purposes, Organic Products in India must be certified only if they are processed and packed as per the National Programme for Organic Production standards.
