APEDA vs NAFED: Key Differences

APEDA stands for Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. It is a statutory body that is responsible for promotion of export of scheduled agricultural as well as processed food products. NAFED, on the other hand, stands for National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. It is the apex organization of marketing cooperatives for agricultural produce in India.

APEDA operates under Ministry of Commerce and Industry whereas NAFED functions under Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Apart from these differences, there are many other differences between them. In this blog post, we shall discuss APEDA vs NAFED in a detailed manner.

What is APEDA?

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) is a statutory body operating under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It was established on 13 February 1986 under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act, 1985. The core objective of APEDA is to promote as well as develop the export of scheduled agricultural products and processed food products.

APEDA is responsible for formulating and enforcing regulations relating to the quality, standards and packaging of agricultural products intended for export from India. This role of APEDA is crucial. Imagine if export-bound agricultural products are not of high quality, do not meet prescribed standards or lack proper packaging. In such cases, they are unlikely to be accepted in international markets. Exporters of scheduled agricultural and processed food exports must mandatorily register with APEDA and secure APEDA certification.

APEDA also contributes to financially strengthening businesses via incentives, joint ventures and subsidy schemes. It administers the Agriculture Export Promotion Scheme designed to encourage agricultural exports by providing them financial assistance for infrastructure development, quality improvement and market promotion.

What is NAFED?

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) is the apex body of marketing cooperatives for agricultural produce in India. It operates under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India. It came into existence on the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October 1958. NAFED is registered under the Multi State Co-operative Societies Act, 2002.

It is tasked with organizing, promoting and developing marketing, processing and storage of agricultural, horticultural and forest produce. NAFED acts as a link between farmers and the market by supporting price stability and ensuring remunerative prices for farmers. It intervenes in the market, especially when prices fall majorly, by procuring agricultural produce at support prices so as to protect farmers from suffering losses.

It is one of the Central Nodal Agencies responsible for procuring 16 notified agricultural commodities, including oilseeds, pulses, and cotton under the Price Support Scheme. Under same scheme, it also continues to act as the sole Central Nodal Agency for the procurement of milling copra, ball copra and de-husked coconut.
