An income tax is a way for businesses to show their expenses, income, investments, taxes, deductions, etc. to the government. It is a direct tax on your salary which go directly to the government and is used to provide services to the public. For instance, health, education, development of public buildings such as schools, hospitals, etc.

The tax is paid by an individual/ HUF/ or any other person who is depending on the income and gains made in a financial year. Every individual or company has to fill out the ITR, the level of income doesn’t matter, because based on the rate of return government makes laws. So, to file an income tax return, you must have complete ITR information. Follow the below steps, which you should follow to file an ITR online.

Step 1: Calculate Income and Tax

First, calculate the income from all sources such as salary, house property, capital gains, etc. Remember, calculate the income tax as per the provisions set by the department.

The taxpayer can claim deductions, in the case of an individual, a standard dedication of Rs. 50,000 is given, and other dedications are as follows:

  • Life insurance premium paid
  • Payment for annuity plan
  • Tuition fees paid for children
  • Deduction of 80C, 80CCD, 80CCF
  • Medi-claim premium (80D)
  • Donations (80G)

Step 2: TDS Certificates and Form 26AS

The taxpayers can take the benefit of TDS, TCS, or any other advance tax paid by them. To summarise this taxpayer can use TDS certificates of all 4 quarters in a financial year.

Form 26AS shows the TDS deducted from your income and it is provided on the website. The information will get automatically updated in Form 26 on every TDS deducted from the company.

Step 3: Income Tax Form

Before filing an income tax return, a taxpayer must choose a form. ITR can be filed online or offline. ITR online file has only two forms available, ITR1 and ITR4. Other forms are available offline.

Step 4: Download ITR Utility

A taxpayer who chooses to file an Income Tax Return in an offline mode needs a utility form for ITR. In this, you can file ITR by uploading the utility-generated JSON.

To download the utility form for the assessment year, visit the official website of income tax and download it in any format such as XML or Java, or JSON based on your preference. But from the AY 2020-21, the income tax department discontinued the XML and Java utilities, so now you can only choose JSON.

Step 5: Fill Your Details

The taxpayer can import the pre-filled data offline utility. It takes the prefilled data already saved details by you. The .json format will be used to import the prefilled information in the ITR.

Other than this, you can download the pre-filled .json after providing the login credentials. Also, you can import draft ITR filled in online mode, here partially filled ITR will be downloaded in online mode. Here you can change the mode of filing also from online to offline mode. Fill in extra details such as your income, tax payable, or refund received based on the calculation of utility.

Step 6: Check Entered Information

After filling in all the information, there’s a button will be given on the right-hand side of the download button. It is a validation button that ensures that all the required details have been filled and nothing is left.

These three options are available to complete your verification.

  • e-Verify Now: Instant e-Verification will be done via Aadhaar OTP/ prevalidated bank account or Demat account
  • e-Verify Later: With this option, you can file your return now and complete e-verification within 120 days.
  • Verify via ITR-V: File the return now and verify the return by sending a signed ITR-V to the ITR department by Normal/ Speed post within 120 days.

Step 7: Upload File on Income Tax Portal

Once the validation process completes, you will get redirected to the income tax e-filing portal. Here click on the ‘Upload Return’ button. In this way, you can file the ITR1, ITR2, ITR3, and ITR4 in offline mode.

Important Step Before Filing the ITR

Mostly this is asked, “How to file ITR online for a salaried person?” So, if you are a salaried individual then you have to pay the taxes before filing the return. Your employer deducts salary on your behalf in the form of TDS and submits it to the government. In case, if you have to pay advance tax, then you will pay 90% of your tax before March 31 of every financial year. At the end of every year, you have to file ITR only once.

Mostly the window to file the ITR is open till July 31 of the relevant assessment year. In case, the due date of filing ITR will increase, the department will notify you through email or message.

Note: File your ITR within the given time period to avoid the late fees.
