Electronic waste or e-waste refers to the discarded electrical or electronic devices. E-waste management is a way of properly disposing and managing e-waste, including old or discarded electronic gadgets such as phones, laptops and televisions. This process involves collecting, transporting, recycling, refurbishing, and disposing of e-waste in a manner which is environmentally friendly.
E-waste management runs by these fundamental principles:
Extended Producer Responsibility or EPR is a strategy aimed at protecting the environment by decreasing the total environmental impact from a product. EPR Certificate is crucial for manufacturers and importers of products for e-waste management. The certificate ensures that they are well aware of their responsibility for managing the waste generated from the products they introduce into the market. EPR authorization process is done by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under MoEFCC.
EPR Certificate is mandatory for the manufacturers and importers to keep e-waste under control. If they fail to obtain this license, they will not be allowed to operate in India. Additionally, they can also face fines and/or debarment.
The EPR certificate serves as an evidence that a business is promoting sustainable practices, and following the principles of extended producer responsibility. It showed that the importers and manufacturers care about the environment and have committed to minimize the environmental impact of their products throughout their lifecycle, from their production to their disposal.
