MPEDA operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is responsible for regulating, developing and promoting the marine products industry. It replaced the erstwhile Marine Products Export Promotion Council that was established in 1961. Before establishment of MPEDA, this council was responsible for looking after the promotion of export of marine products from India. 

MPEDA is the concerned authority for registration of infrastructural facilities for seafood export trade. It promotes Indian seafood products in the overseas markets. It implements schemes that are vital to the industry. It promotes deep-sea fishing projects through test fishing, joint ventures and upgradation/installation of equipment to enhance fishing efficiency. MPEDA is headquartered in Kochi, Kerala. 

Services Offered by MPEDA

The following are some of the services and functions of MPEDA:-

  • Conducting training sessions for fishermen, processing workers, aquaculture farmers and other stakeholders in the respective fields pertaining to fisheries.

  • Issuing MPEDA registration certificates to seafood exporters, and facilitating international trade.

  • Acting as an intermediary to resolve trade-related disputes between parties.

  • Setting quality standards for seafood exports.

  • Inspecting marine products to ensure they meet the global safety and quality standards.

Composition of MPEDA

The composition of MPEDA is as follows:-

  • A Chairman appointed by the Central Government;

  • Director of Marine Products Export Development, ex-officio;

  • Three Parliament members. Out of them, two shall be elected by the House of the People (Lok Sabha) and one by the Council of States (Rajya Sabha); 

  • A total of five members to represent respectively the Ministries of the Central Government dealing with the following;- 

    • agriculture, 

    • finance, 

    • foreign trade, 

    • industry, and 

    • shipping and transport; 

  • Up to 20 members who represent state governments, fishing vessel owners, processing plant owners, dealers and industry employees.
