For Indians, gold is more than just a precious metal. It holds deep cultural as well as religious significance in Indian society. It is considered auspicious and is especially treasured during festivals like Diwali and Dhanteras. Gold is commonly used in religious rituals and offerings to deities. However, its value goes way beyond tradition.

In times of crisis, such as pandemics or war-like situations, gold is seen as a ‘safe haven’, often leading to a surge in its price during such times. That’s why the gold selling business has remained one of the most reliable and profitable businesses of all time.

If you are planning to start a gold jewellery business, you may be wondering which specific gold certifications are required to legally operate. Well, you need to secure BIS hallmark certification (for selling gold) as well as jeweller registration (for running a gold jewellery selling business). Want to know more? Check out this article for all the details!

BIS Hallmark: Requirement for Selling Gold Jewellery

To sell gold jewellery and artifacts in India, you require a BIS hallmark. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issues it. The BIS hallmark verifies the purity level of gold and ensures its authenticity and meets the quality standards set forth by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

BIS-hallmarked gold jewelry is certified in different purity levels, including 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K. A gold jewelry with 14K hallmark is produced from 58.3% pure gold. On the other hand, 24K gold jewelry is produced from 99.9% pure gold.

If a gold jewelry does not have a hallmark, you cannot sell it at your jewelry store. So, make sure to get the BIS hallmark registration in a timely manner.

Jeweller Registration: Requirement for Gold Jewelry Selling Business

Jeweller registration with BIS is a mandatory requirement for any individual or entity wishing to sell hallmarked gold jewellery in India. It ensures that jewellery sold by the jeweller meets specific purity and quality standards set by the BIS. If a jeweller has multiple stores, they need to get separate BIS jeweller registration for each store where they want to sell hallmarked jewellery.

Once registered, jewellers can have their gold jewellery tested and hallmarked at authorized BIS Assaying and Hallmarking Centres. However, if the jewelry is already hallmarked, then it isn’t required. This is because a hallmark remains valid for the lifetime of gold jewellery.

BIS Jeweller Registration Process
