India Post launches DigiPIN (Digital Postal Index Number)

India Post has launched DigiPIN (Digital Postal Index Number). It is a new geo-coded addressing system that has been designed to simplify location identification and enhance the delivery of public as well as private services. Unlike the current six-digit PIN code that identifies a broad postal area, DigiPIN assigns a 10-character alphanumeric code to an approx. 4-meter by 4-meter grid.

This system uses latitude and longitude to generate a precise digital location reference. This allows for much greater accuracy when it comes to identifying particular spots. It is important to note that DigiPIN does not replace the existing PIN code. Instead, India Post is developing it as an additional digital addressing layer that can function alongside traditional postal addresses as well as PIN codes.

The Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) under ISRO developed the DigiPIN. India Post describes this system as an open source national addressing grid that provides a common location reference for government services, logistics and other applications.

How does a DigiPIN differ from a PIN Code?

A conventional PIN code typically covers a larger geographical area, such as a locality or a group of neighborhoods. In contrast to this code, there is DigiPIN that divides India's geographical landscape into small grids that measure approximately 4 meters by 4 meters, with each grid assigned a unique code. This system can be particularly beneficial in areas where identifying addresses is challenging or where addresses are not formally structured.

According to India Post, DigiPIN can also be utilized in rural and remote locations as well as areas lacking traditional street addresses. What’s more, the DigiPIN system is designed to function offline. Since codes are generated on the basis of geographical coordinates, an internet connection is not necessary to use addressing system once location information is available.

Potential Usage of DigiPIN in Deliveries and Emergency Services

The government views DigiPIN as a means to improve the precision of location-based services. The system can assist logistics and e-commerce companies in pinpointing delivery locations in a more accurate manner, especially in cases where traditional addresses appear to be vague. The system also has potential applications in emergency response, disaster management and the delivery of government services. Having an exact location reference enables agencies to accurately identify location of individuals, facilities or government assets.

India Post has stated that DigiPIN can also facilitate digital KYC processes, support welfare program implementation and serve other location-based government services. The technical documentation and source code for system have been made publicly available to enable other government departments, businesses and developers to integrate it into their platforms.

How to find your DigiPIN?

The ‘Know Your DigiPIN’ service can be accessed by the users via India Post website. To generate the DigiPIN, the website utilizes the device’s location information. According to India Post, the users are not required to create an account or log into the portal to obtain the code.

The initiative is part of a larger effort by the Department of Posts to create a standardized digital addressing system that links physical locations with digital services. Instead of replacing the familiar PIN code, the DigiPIN aims to enhance India’s existing addressing system by adding a more precise digital layer.
