Every taxpayer who has a PAN card must link it with the Aadhaar Card, according to the Government guidelines. The last date to link the two documents was June 30th, 2023. In case, you miss the deadline, you can still link the PAN with Aadhaar but have to pay the amount. To check the status of your linked PAN with Aadhaar, you can use multiple options such as SMS, income tax website, or UIDAI website. 

 

After checking the status, if you find that your Aadhaar is not linked with the PAN card, you need to link it before 30 June 2023 to avoid paying a penalty of Rs.1,000. The government has made it mandatory for taxpayers to link their Aadhaar with their PAN cards. In the article, we share the process of linking your PAN with Aadhaar.

What is an Aadhaar Card?

In India, an Aadhaar is a Unique Identification Number that is issued by UIDAI to the residents of India. It is used as a document of identification for address and identity. In multiple government and non-government schemes, open a bank account, file taxes, obtain SIM cards, and receive government subsidies.

The PAN stands for Permanent Account Number, it is a 10-character identifier, having both letters and numbers known as PAN. The card is generally provided in the format of a sturdy, laminated plastic card. The individuals must possess a PAN if specific criteria are met - primarily centred around earning levels and certain types of financial activities.

 

For instance, if your annual revenue surpasses a particular threshold or engage in designated monetary dealings requiring PAN usage fall into this category. Charities, companies, and professionals also require a PAN depending on individual circumstances. However, the PAN system streamlines taxation processes while promoting transparency in financial matters.

Why Link an Aadhaar Card with a PAN Card?

Here are several benefits to linking your Aadhaar with your PAN. These key reasons are as follows:

  1. Easy Tax Filing: At the time of connecting your Aadhaar with PAN, it takes your information for pre-fill. This information is filled out automatically while filing your income tax returns online. So, this reduces your risk of errors and saves you time. Also helps in faster processing of returns and refunds.
  2. Open a New Bank Account: Now, many banks require your Aadhaar-PAN to be linked to open new bank accounts and online wallets. Process to Link Aadhaar with PAN

To link your PAN card with your Aadhaar card follow this process:

  • Visit the Income tax e-filing portal.
  • Register on the website (if not registered yet). The user ID will be your PAN number.
  • Log in by entering the User ID, password and date of birth.
  • A pop-up window will appear, and take you to link your PAN with Aadhaar. In case, the window does not appear, go to ‘Profile Settings’, on the Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  • Your details such as name, date of birth, and gender will already be mentioned according to the PAN details.
  • Verify your details of PAN with Aadhaar, and if there is a mismatch, then you have to correct the information in either of the documents.
  • If the details match, then enter your Aadhaar number and click on the ‘link now’ button.
  • A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN card.

How to Check the Link Status of Your Aadhaar with PAN, Via SMS?

  • Type a message in the format: "UIDPAN <your 12-digit Aadhaar number> <your 10-digit PAN number>"
  • Send the message to either 567678 or 56161.
  • You will receive a reply message stating whether your Aadhaar and PAN are linked or not.

Check the Status Through the UIDAI Website

  • Visit the UIDAI website: https://uidai.gov.in/
  • Click on "Verify Aadhaar."
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number or email address associated with your Aadhaar.
  • Enter the OTP received on your mobile or email.
  • Click on "Verify Aadhaar."
  • If your PAN is linked to your Aadhaar, it will be displayed under the "Linked Documents" section.
