OGAI full form is Online Gaming Authority of India. It is a digital-first regulatory body functioning under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It was notified under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2026 and became operational on 1 May, 2026. OGAI is tasked with regulating online gaming, classifying games, handling complaints of aggrieved and imposing penalties on violators.
Before OGAI, there was no centralized, statutory regulatory body that worked specifically for the online gaming sector in the country. However, as there is a steep rise in the no. of online gaming platforms and associated risks like fraud and addiction as well as data privacy concerns, the establishment of a dedicated regulatory authority was the need of the hour.
OGAI consists of a total of six members, including one chairperson, and five joint secretaries from different ministries of the Indian government.
Chairperson:- Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology serves as the OGAI chairperson.
Member (Ministry of Home Affairs):- Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs is one of the members of OGAI.
Member (Ministry of Information & Broadcasting):- Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is also a member of OGAI.
Member (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports):- Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is one of the OGAI members.
Member (Ministry of Finance):- One of the key members of OGAI is the Joint Secretary, Department of Financial Services.
Member (Ministry of Law and Justice):- Joint Secretary of the Department of Legal Affairs is also one of the main members of OGAI.
OGAI plays an important role in securing the integrity of the digital gaming sector. The key functions of this authority are as follows:
The primary function of OGAI is to regulate the online gaming sector and ensure a legally compliant gaming environment for all the gamers.
The authority enforces a complete ban on real-money online gaming.
It imposes fines and penalties on platforms offering/facilitating/advertising banned money games.
It maintains the official registry of games and also a blacklist of banned money games.
OGAI takes care of the user complaints/appeals that gaming service providers’ grievance redressal mechanisms fail to resolve.
It works in coordination with financial institutions and law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with regulations and illegal financial activities.
