India’s telecommunication market is currently ranked as the second largest in the world; it is currently valued at INR 3,000 billion and in the near future, it is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 7-9 percent. The Government of India’s main focus in the context of the telecommunication industry has been on drone technology, robotic automation via machine-to-machine communications, artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing. The government believes that they have a potential to transform not just the telecommunication industry but also lead to creation of new business and investment opportunities.
Due to the rise in data traffic and an alarming need for personal data protection, it has become necessary to ensure that the telecom networks used by the masses are secure and trustworthy. Realizing this necessity, the Government made it mandatory for the telecom companies to secure Trusted Telecom Approval from the vendors. To ensure the same, in June 2021, the DoT launched trustedtelecom.gov.in, a portal for the telcos to implement the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector. The portal has enlisted “Trusted” vendors for the TSPs. TSPs can type the vendor’s name and the product they prefer to obtain for their service usage. Thereafter, the portal will compare the entered details with the list of trusted vendors and products. The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) has been given the task of determining whether to include a Vendor as a Trusted Source or a Telecom Product as a Trusted Product.
