In the age of digitalization, telecommunication has become an inseparable part of our lives. The Telecom Industry includes the following subsectors: Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MNVOs), White Spaces, Infrastructure, Equipment, Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), and Broadband. India’s telecommunication market is currently ranked as the second largest in the world; it is currently valued at INR 3,000 billion and in the near future, it is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 7-9 percent. The Government of India’s main focus in the context of the telecommunication industry has been on drone technology, robotic automation via machine-to-machine communications, artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing. The government believes that they have a potential to transform not just the telecommunication industry but also lead to creation of new business and investment opportunities.

Importance of Trusted Telecom Approval

Due to the rise in data traffic and an alarming need for personal data protection, it has become necessary to ensure that the telecom networks used by the masses are secure and trustworthy. Realizing this necessity, the Government made it mandatory for the telecom companies to secure Trusted Telecom Approval from the vendors. To ensure the same, in June 2021, the DoT launched trustedtelecom.gov.in, a portal for the telcos to implement the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector. The portal has enlisted “Trusted” vendors for the TSPs. TSPs can type the vendor’s name and the product they prefer to obtain for their service usage. Thereafter, the portal will compare the entered details with the list of trusted vendors and products. The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) has been given the task of determining whether to include a Vendor as a Trusted Source or a Telecom Product as a Trusted Product.

With the help of trusted approval, telecom companies ensure that their products and services meet certain safety and reliability requirements. To verify the performance of telecom networks and devices, they undergo rigorous testing and certification procedures. Cyber threats, compromised data privacy and poor quality of telecom services can all be avoided by trusted approval. Trusted Approval builds trust among the customers since it assures them about the security and reliability of the telecom services they have subscribed to. This approval is also essential for compliance with rules and regulations set by the Central Government.

It is mandatory for the TSPs to obtain an operator license to function as a telecom operator. Each TSP is required to stick to the industry’s rules and regulations and obtain the license issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). DoT serves as the highest authority for dealing with the matters related to the telecom sector in the country, such as telegraphs, telephones, wireless, data, facsimile and telematic services. DoT oversees tasks ranging from spectrum management and allocation to formulating policies, rules and regulations and monitoring. The Telecom License, issued by DoT, permits eligible entities to deliver telecom services across the country under one or more licenses granted by the department.

Trusted Approval in Telecom Benefits

Trusted Approval helps to ensure that telecom networks and devices are safe and protected against any cyber threats. By rigorously testing and certifying the performance of telecom services, trusted approval assures their overall reliability. Trusted approval is an assurance of the fact that telecom companies comply with the government’s rules and regulations due the fear of fines and penalties.

Trusted approval has had a major impact on the way the telecom industry has transformed. It has aided in building customer trust and confidence and led them to adopt telecom services. Additionally, trusted approval has led to global expansion in the telecom industry. Telecom companies can operate in different locations across the country in order to expand their customer base by adhering to the regulatory requirements. Due to testing and certifying procedures, many telecom companies invest in research and development so that their products and services can meet the requirements.

Conclusion

Trusted approval is an essential process in the telecom industry. It guarantees the security and reliability of telecom networks and devices. The process of obtaining a trusted approval certificate in telecom is not an easy task. It requires rigorous testing before it is obtained by a telecom company. This certificate can only be achieved when the DoT gives an approval after examining the products and services that meet the required standards. By clearing the rigorous testing and certification process, telecom companies win the trust of their customers and their products and services are seen as trustworthy and having high standards.
