How to Download FSSAI Certificate

Since its establishment in 2008, the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) under the aegis of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been responsible for laying down science based standards for articles of food and for regulating their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and important, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption and for matters concerning Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act).

At the Apex level, FSSAI is a single reference point for matters regarding food safety and standards. It is accompanied by the Scientific Committees and Panels in setting standards of the food industry. FSSAI guides and regulates all persons involved in manufacturing, processing, storage, import transportation, retail of food and on issues of food safety and nutrition with primary responsibility for enforcement largely with the State Food Safety Commissioners. The Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of FSSAI are appointed by the Central Government. 

From full-fledged food and beverage manufacturing companies like Cadbury and Nestle to small home businesses selling papads and pickles, obtaining a FSSAI license is mandatory as per the FSS Act.

Types of FSSAI licenses

There are three different kinds of FSSAI licenses:

FSSAI Basic Registration

The FSSAI Basic Registration is mandatory for all the small businesses or startups, like petty food manufacturers and small-sized manufacturers, storage units, retailers, transporters, distributors and marketers, etc. if their turnover is less than Rs. 12 lakhs per annum. In future, if the turnover crosses Rs. 12 lacs, then the basic registration can be upgraded to State License.

FSSAI State License

FSSAI State Registration/License is obtained by mid-sized businesses that have an annual turnover which is more than 12 lakhs and less than 20 crores. If this license is not obtained, the business operations can be halted. Additionally, all-grain and pulses milling units are required to have State License regardless of the turnover. This type of License is issued by the State Government and it is mandatory for the licensee to operate in only one state.

FSSAI Central License

This license is mandatory for large businesses like importers, 100 percent oriented units, large manufacturers, operators in the Central Government agencies, airports, dockyards, etc. if their annual turnover crosses 20 crores. FSSAI Central License is issued by the Central Government.

Process of Issuing FSSAI Certificate

Businesses can obtain FSSAI registration online by filling and submitting the FSSAI registration form. There are two forms available, namely: Form A and Form B. Form A is for getting the FSSAI registration certificate, while Form B is intended for obtaining FSSAI Centre and State Licenses. The forms can be submitted online on the official FSSAI website easily. Alternatively, you can submit them in person to the Food and Safety Department.

Upon receiving the FSSAI form, the FSSAI authorities will confirm the jurisdiction of the application and office fee receipt, check the documents carefully, and examine food premises before granting a license (if necessary). Once the FSSAI is satisfied with the application, they will mail the applicant a copy of the FSSAI License/Certificate. 

License/Certificate can be applied to a maximum period of 5 years.

Steps on How to Download FSSAI Certificate 

You can download the FSSAI Certificate from the Food Authority’s official website.

Step 1: Visit the official FSSAI website FoSCoS and click on the ‘Login - Food Businesses’ option available on the homepage.

Step 2: Once you have logged in, click on the ‘Issued’ option available on the dashboard. 

Step 3: Click on the ‘Issued-License’ option after you have applied for the FSSAI License or the ‘Issued-Registration Certificate’ option in case you have applied for FSSAI Registration.

Q.2) Who requires a FSSAI License?

A. All the food businesses operating in India need to get registered. Businesses with an annual turnover of more than 12 lakhs need to get registered and licensed. 

Q.3) What is the validity period of the FSSAI License?

A. FSSAI License’s validity period ranges from 1 to 5 years. Once the validation has expired, it is mandatory to renew the license to continue operations.
