The FSSAI number consists of 14 digits in total, each of which holds specific significance. Below we will explain the meaning of each digit contained in the FSSAI number:
First Digit:- In the FSSAI no., the very first digit denotes whether it is a license number or a registration number. Digit ‘1’ implies it is a license number. On the other hand, digit ‘2’ implies it is a registration number.
Second and Third Digit:- The second and third digit of the FSSAI no. denotes the state or union territory within which the food business operates. The code for the central license is “00”. However, for state license and registration, unique codes for each state are defined by FSSAI.
Fourth and Fifth Digit:- The FSSAI number’s fourth and fifth digits reflect the food business’ year of commencement. For instance, if the business commenced in 2024, then the code will be ‘24’. If the business started in 2025, then the code will be ‘25’.
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Digit:- These digits denote the designated/registrar officers under whose jurisdiction the license or registration falls. For each and every designated/registrar officer, FSSAI has specific numbers.
Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth, Thirteenth and Fourteenth Digit:- These 6 digits represent the unique serial number assigned to a food business operator under a particular designated officer.

The FSSAI number obtained by the producer and its logo must be placed on the label of the food package in a manner that is prominently visible. Further, the color of the logo and number displayed shall be in contrast with the background in case of multiple units.
The license no. should be placed on the addresses of the multiple units on the label of the product. Moreover, the number of the producing company must also be displayed along with the lot number.
When the goods are imported the importer is required to display the logo and license number of FSSAI along with the name and address of the importer on a sticker to be affixed before getting customs clearance.
The size of the letters and the numerals of the license no. should be as prescribed in Food Safety and Standard (Packaging and Labelling) Regulation, 2011.
